Curtis Fuller

Born: December 15, 1934

Curtis Fuller was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1934. He came to music late, playing the baritone horn in high school and switching to the trombone at age 16. Detroit, at the time, was the breeding ground for an astonishing pool of fresh, highly individual talent. Milt Jackson and Hank Jones had already gone to New York and made their names. But coming of age in Detroit in the early fifties were Fuller, Donald Byrd, Elvin and Thad Jones, Paul Chambers, Louis Hayes, Kenny Burrell, Barry Harris, Pepper Adams, Yusef Lateef, Sonny Red, Hugh Lawson, Doug Watkins, Tommy Flanagan and many others who would make the mid- decade migration to New York and eventually international recognition. In 1953, Curtis left the local scene to serve his two-year stint in the army, where he met and played with Cannonball Adderley and Junior Mance among others. When he returned home, he began working with Yusef Lateef's quintet

Bruce Fowler

Born: July 10, 1947

Bruce Fowler is a prominent American trombone player and composer. He notably played trombone on many Frank Zappa records, as well as with Captain Beefheart, and in the Fowler Brothers Band. Currently, he composes and arranges music for movies, and has been the composer, orchestrator, or conductor for many popular films.

Bruce is the son of jazz educator William L. Fowler and the brother of multi-instrumentalist Walt Fowler and bassist Tom Fowler. He is the father of Rhea Fowler, bass guitar player for The Naturals. Bruce Fowler is participating in both The Band From Utopia, and Jon Larsen's, Strange News From Mars, both feat. Zappa alumni Tommy Mars, Arthur Barrow, et al.

Carl Fontana

Born: July 18, 1928

It is an odd fact that all the really outstanding jazz trombonists were very low on ego. Carl Fontana, perhaps the most gifted player of his time, certainly was. He played potent and dazzling music in such a facile way that it was rather like Leonardo da Vinci sawing off a length of picture on demand. Fontana first surfaced in 1951. The Woody Herman band was playing at the Blue Room in New Orleans when its virtuoso trombone soloist Urbie Green had to return to New York for three weeks when his wife gave birth. John Fedchock

Born: September 18, 1957

John Fedchock’s illustrious career in jazz has spanned over four decades. Since his emergence on the scene in 1980, Fedchock has established himself as a world-class trombone soloist, a heralded bandleader, and a Grammy-nominated arranger. An in-demand performer and writer in New York City, his multifaceted talents have led him to become one of NYC’s premier jazz artists. His critically acclaimed John Fedchock New York Big Band has become a marquee group, showcasing Fedchock’s trombone and arranging as well as the band’s all-star soloists. The JFNYBB’s five CDs on the MAMA and Reservoir Music labels have all received high praise from critics and extraordinary success on national jazz radio charts. Robin Eubanks

Born: October 25, 1955

Robin Eubanks is the premier jazz trombonist of his generation. Whether performing with his groups, EB3 or Mental Images, or with the critically acclaimed Dave Holland Quintet and Big Band—with whom he was an original member- Robin is an artist whose impact on audiences has proven powerful and lasting. Robin has recorded seven albums as a leader featuring his original music. Robin was born to a very musical family: His brother, Kevin Eubanks, is the music director for The Tonight Show and another brother, Duane, plays trumpet in New York. Their mother has been a music educator for more than 30 years; and their Uncle Ray Bryant is a prominent jazz pianist in his own right

Tommy Dorsey

Born: November 19, 1905

Trombonist Thomas "Tommy" Dorsey was born in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania, the younger brother of famed jazz clarinetist, Jimmy Dorsey. In early years he was equally well-known as both trumpet and trombone player, recording several hot jazz solos on trumpet in 1920s, including "The Spell of the Blues" with the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra for OKeh on 1/26/29. His career closely followed that of brother Jimmy; by 1930 he was one of the most successful free-lance radio and recording artists on trombone, recognized both for his exceptional tone and legato style on ballads and for his fine solos on faster tempi. Prior to the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra, Tommy worked with such units as Jean Goldkette, Paul Whiteman and recorded with Bix Beiderbecke, (Bix & His Rhythm Jugglers); Joe Venuti & Eddie Lang and of course Red Nichols, (Red Nichols & His Five Pennies). Tommy and Jimmy formed an orchestra together in the early 1930s known as "The Dorsey Brothers Orchestra," and included Glenn Miller, Ray McKinley and Bob Crosby

Raul De Souza

Born: August 23, 1934

RAUL DE SOUZA, a native of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) is considered by international critics (Down Beat, New York Jazz Magazine, Rolling Stones and many other) as one of the greatest trombone players in the world. Multinstrumentalist, composer, he plays alto and tenor sax and percussion besides the trombone. Having recorded nine albums, winning numerous national and international awards he is the inventor of the Souzabone, an eletric trombone set at C, with the implement of a chromatic valve. RAUL DE SOUZA is an entry in the Also Encyclopedia of Jazz by Leonard Feather. His album "Colours" is adopted at the Berklee School of Music (EUA) as a subject matter, due to the rhytmic and melodic variations it presents

Steve Davis

Born: April 14, 1967

Steve Davis is widely regarded as one of today's leading improvisors on the trombone. His lyrical, hard-swinging style first gained him broad recognition during the 1990's while working with the bands of jazz legends Art Blakey, Jackie McLean, Chick Corea's acclaimed sextet Origin and the renowned cooperative sextet, One For All. Born in Worcester, MA in 1967, Steve was raised in Binghamton, NY and graduated in 1989 from The Hartt School's Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz (University of Hartford). It was Mc Lean's guidence and recommendation that helped Davis land his first major gig with Art Blakey in NYC in Dec 1989
