Conrad Herwig

Born:
New York-based jazz trombonist Conrad Herwig is considered one of the world’s complete jazz musicians, atop both the performing and jazz educational fields with an abundance of composer and arranger credits, as well. To date, he has released 20 recordings as a leader in addition to contributing to nearly 200 other recording sessions with some of the most notable artists in jazz. He has performed and recorded with Miles Davis, Joe Henderson, Eddie Palmieri, Tito Puente, Frank Sinatra, Joe Lovano and Tom Harrell, among many others.
Born November 1, 1959, in Lawton, Okla., Herwig is an inductee of that state’s Jazz Hall of Fame. He spent his formative musical years in Hawaii under the aura of jazz icon trombonist Trummy Young, graduating from Punahou High School. The gifted trombonist then went to the University of North Texas, performing as a member of the famed One O’Clock Jazz Lab Band. Later in his career he would complete his studies at Goddard College in Plainfield, Vt., where he received his Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Afro-Caribbean ethnomusicology. Herwig’s formal studies came to a close with a Master of Arts degree in Jazz Studies from Queens College, a branch of City University of New York.

Peter Herbolzheimer

Born:
Herbolzheimer migrated from communist Romania to West Germany in 1951. In 1953 he moved to the United States of America, where he worked as guitarist. He returned to Germany in 1957, took up the trombone and for one year studied at Nuremberg Conservatory. In the 1960s he played with the Nuremberg radio dance orchestra and with Bert Kämpfert's orchestra. In 1968 he became member of the pit orchestra of Hamburg theater (Deutsches Schauspielhaus) directed by Hans Koller. In 1969 Herbolzheimer formed his Rhythm Combination and Brass (RC&B) for which he wrote most of the arrangements

Craig Harris

Born:
Craig S. Harris is an American jazz trombonist, who started working with {{m: Sun Ra = 10507}} in 1976. He also has worked with {{m: Abdullah Ibrahim = 7858}}, {{m: David Murray = 9702}}, {{m: Lester Bowie = 5209}}, {{m: Cecil Taylor = 4823}}, {{m: Sam Rivers = 10719}}, {{m: Muhal Richard Abrams = 3246}}, and {{m: Charlie Haden = 7320}}. He has recorded since 1983 as leader for India Navigation, Soul Note and JMT. For the latter he recorded with two groups. The Tailgater's Tales was a quintet with clarinetist {{m: Don Byron = 3807}}, trumpeter {{m: Eddie Allen = 3358}}, {{m: Anthony Cox = 5958}} on double bass, and {{m: Pheeroan akLaff = 3304}} on drums. Slide Hampton

Born:
Slide Hampton's distinguished career spans decades in the evolution of jazz. At the age of 12 he was already touring the Midwest with the Indianapolis-based Hampton Band, led by his father and comprising other members of his musical family. By 1952, at the age of 20, he was performing at Carnegie Hall with the Lionel Hampton Band. He then joined Maynard Ferguson's band, playing trombone and providing exciting charts on such popular tunes as "The Fugue," "Three Little Foxes," and "Slide's Derangement."
As his reputation grew, he soon began working with bands led by Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie, Barry Harris, Thad Jones, Mel Lewis, and Max Roach, again contributing both original compositions and arrangements

Bennie Green

Born:
Bennie Green was one of the few trombonists of the 1950s who played in a style not influenced by J.J. Johnson (Bill Harris was another). His witty sound and full tone looked backwards to the swing era yet was open to the influence of R&B. After playing locally in Chicago, he was with the Earl Hines Orchestra during 1942-1948 (except for two years in the military). Green gained some fame for his work with Charlie Ventura (1948-1950) before joining Earl Hines' small group (1951-1953). Wycliffe Gordon
