Francesca Han: Sisyphus

by Sue Yang
October 18, 2026

Camus thought the interesting part of the myth was the walk back down. The climb is all effort. It is on the descent, with the rock at the bottom and the hill still to do again, that Sisyphus sees his situation whole, and Camus calls this the hour of consciousness. Francesca Han has named an album ...

Japanese pianist and composer Satoko Fujii has long demonstrated her ability to marshal ensembles of varying size--from intimate duos to sprawling orchestras--with an ear attuned to both spontaneity and design. That unwavering focus, combined with a superhuman creative momentum, has resulted--as of 2025--in a discography of more than a hundred albums. She has been especially effective ...

by John Sharpe
January 3, 2025

From the 200 or so discs that I heard in 2024, here are the ten new issues and three gems saved from obscurity, which gave me the most pleasure. As always these selections are entirely subjective, and take no account of the many other albums which I would no doubt have loved if I had heard ...

Satoko Fujii Tokyo Trio: Jet Black

by Neri Pollastri
July 29, 2024
