Scott Fields

Fields has produced music on and off since the 1960s, first in Chicago, then in other places scattered about North America, Europe, and Asia. Cologne is now his base, if perhaps not quite yet his home. Fields' musical education was haphazard, to say the least. In a case of the blind leading the blind, at first he taught himself guitar. Later he was introduced to music theory in ad hoc study groups, attended theory and compositions courses at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and tested the patience of a half-dozen or so private guitar teachers. As a composer he first wrote simple folk songs (this is age 12 stuff), then rock songs, then parodies of rock songs (these reflected his self-loathing of his insistence on continuing to perform as a rock guitarist just for the attention), then jazz head tunes, all of which led to his current mish-mash of material that, although he has scant interest in taxonomy, could be fairly called New Music or Avant-Jazz

Scott Fields Ensemble: Barclay

Read "Barclay" reviewed by Glenn Astarita

Guitarist Scott Fields' distinctive approach to composition marches to the next level on this third installment of the “Beckett Trilogy," where he uses additional Samuel Barclay Beckett (1906-1989) plays as an inspiration for these three extended works, based on the novelist's text/plots. The ensemble seemingly weaves some of Beckett's black comedy and humor into ...

Ifa y Xango Tentet: Twice Left Handed / Shavings

Read "Twice Left Handed / Shavings" reviewed by Dave Wayne

A culturally improbable collaboration of Brazilian, Portuguese, and Belgian musicians, the Ifa y Xango Tentet is easily one of the most adventurous large ensembles operating anywhere in the world today. Co-operative in nature, and playing entirely their own original compositions, the group's vision, as captured on Twice Left Handed / Shavings encompasses jazz, rock, post-rock, doom ...

Elliott Sharp / Scott Fields Ostryepolya PanRec / NotTwo Records 2013 The musical meeting of innovative guitarists Elliott Sharp and Scott Fields came by coincidence. Both were aware of each other's work for many years, but the opportunity of playing as a duo never arose. Each is a ...

John Hollenbeck: profilo di artista

Read "John Hollenbeck: profilo di artista" reviewed by Angelo Leonardi

Scott Fields / Jeffrey Lependorf: Everything is in the instructions

Read "Everything is in the instructions" reviewed by Eyal Hareuveni

Composer of contemporary chamber music and opera and certified master of the Japanese shakuhachi flute Jeffrey Lependorf cites an insightful incident he had with iconoclastic composer John Cage that reveals much about typical misconceptions about what is right and what is wrong in music and art. Lebendorf wanted Cage to clarify his vague instructions for a ...

All About Jazz needs your support

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, shelter in place and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary effort that will help musicians now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the bottom right video ad). Thank you.
