Roy Nathanson

Born:

Roy Nathanson has had a varied career as a saxophonist, composer, bandleader, poet, actor and teacher.   

During the thirty years Nathanson has led the Jazz Passengers, the band has recorded 10 CDs and toured extensively. As primary composer for the band, Nathanson has written songs for a variety of singers including Elvis Costello, Deborah Harry, Jeff Buckley, Jimmy Scott and Mavis Staples. Nathanson also leads Sotto Voce, a band that investigates various relationships between text and music in performances and recordings.  

His radio play, You’re The Fool, was performed and commissioned on NPR and his meditation on time, The Rock Concert, was commissioned by the Science Museum of the University of Wisconsin.

Nerya Zidon

Nerya Zidon (a.k.a NERY) is a saxophonist, composer, music producer and audio engineer born in 1993 in Jerusalem (Israel). Zidon has performed in esteemed venues including the Red Sea Jazz Festival, Jerusalem Jazz Festival, Toronto Jazz Festival and New York’s Lincoln Center. He shared the stage with music legends Billy Cobham, John Patitucci, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Tigran Hamasyan, Shankar Mahadevan and Ustad Zakir Hussain to name a few. Zidon’s musical journey began at the age of 5, playing the piano and later the violin. 7 years later he picked up the saxophone, and was admitted into the very selective Jerusalem Academy of Music & Dance High School in Jerusalem

MONIKA HOFFMAN is a Swedish singer with Hungarian-German roots. She is at home not only in classical music, latin, jazz and pop, but also in three languages, namely Swedish, Hungarian and English – all of which she uses for shades of musical expression that are quite distinct. Monika Hoffman studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston, where she played with legends like Michael Brecker and Charlie Haden. In Hungary she became well known for participating in the TV show Megasztár – Voice of the Year, which resulted in a recording contract and a spot in the Hungarian finals for the Eurovision Song Contest

Dennis Kwok

Toronto-based multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger, producer, and educator, Dennis Kwok, exists at the intersection of bebop, contemporary classical, free improvisation, and pop music. Originally from Calgary, his interest in jazz and improvised music led him to pursue studies at Humber College, where he completed his Bachelor of Music in Jazz Saxophone. A versatile woodwind doubler, Dennis has been featured as part of the 2020 TD Toronto Jazz Festival Discovery Series, occupied musician-in-residence at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in 2021, and backed JUNO-award winning artists, such as The Tenors, Jackie Richardson, and Allison Au. Dennis has also been active in musical theatre orchestras, including productions of Follies (Royal Conservatory of Music), Chicago (Stratford Festival), 1922 (Shaw Festival), Escape to Margaritaville (Theatre Calgary) and Mean Girls (Mirvish).

Allexa Nava

Allexa Nava is a saxophonist, flautist and composer, originally from Peru. Winner of Tomorrow ́s Warriors 'Alf Williams Memorial Award' and learning under the mentorship of Gary Crosby, Ben Burrell and Denys Baptiste.

She has graced the stages of several significant festivals across the UK, including We Out Here, Wilderness, Brainchild, and Glastonbury. She has also perfomed as venues such as Ronnie Scotts, Pizza Express Jazz Club, Jazz in the Round, Barbican, Kings Place.

Additionally, she collaborated with the rising female group Colectiva, performing at the renowned SXSW festival in Austin, Texas.

Sisonke Xonti

Sisonke Xonti started playing music at the age of ten but it was only when he turned thirteen that he fell in love with the saxophone and continued playing classical saxophone until he got his UNISA Grade 8 Distinction (2006). Muhammad was born and raised Pretoria, South Africa. He was never formally educated in music, but grew up surrounded by it - in the Malay choral Gadaat recitals his grandfather used to host on Sundays and tinkering at the piano his grandmother bought for his elder sisters (who were already taking lessons when he was born). Muhammad was selected as a member of the Standard Bank National Schools’ Big Band for the years 2006, 2007 and 2008 at the Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Festival, Grahamstown. The 2008 band, conducted by Shannon Mowday also performed at the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz in Johannesburg.
