Michael Zilber

San Francisco Bay Area based saxophonist and composer Michael Zilber is described by NEA Jazz Master David Liebman as “one of the best players and composers around anywhere. Period!” The Canadian-born ex-New Yorker has 10 albums to his name as a leader or co-leader. He has also performed or recorded with everyone from Liebman to Miroslav Vitous, Mike Clark, Dizzy Gillespie and Bob Berg, to name just a very few. Zilber co-led a band with drumming great Steve Smith for eight years, releasing the top 20 recording Reimagined: Jazz Standards, Volume 1 in 2003. Sherri Roberts was raised in Atlanta, Georgia and received a B.A. in theatre from Antioch College in Ohio. It was there she was first introduced to jazz studies - its history and repertoire - as well as early Renaissance choral music and the 20th Century avant garde. John-Carlos Perea

JOHN-CARLOS PEREA Electric Bass Guitar, Northern Plains Pow-Wow Vocals, Cedar Flute Grammy-winning pow-wow singer and cedar flutist John-Carlos Perea (Mescalero Apache, Irish, German) was born in Dulce, New Mexico and raised in San Francisco, California. He received his BA in Music from San Francisco State University in 2000, studying electric bass with David Motto and ethnomusicology with Dr. Hafez Modirzadeh. During his time at San Francisco State, Perea also studied Northern style pow-wow music with Dr. Bernard Hoehner-Peji and sang with the Blue Horse Singers, Dr. Hoehner-Peji’s pow-wow drum group. Vincent Herring is a saxophone virtuoso with a uniquely intense and vigorous musical voice. He is considered one of the premier saxophonists of his generation. Barry Finnerty

BARRY FINNERTY, was born in San Francisco on December 3, 1951. My father, Warren, was an award-winning actor (he received the Village Voice Obie for Best Actor of 1960 for "The Connection") and my mother, Ruth, was an excellent classical pianist who later got her PhD and taught English at UC Berkeley. I began playing piano and reading music at age 5, then got my first guitar (a classical) for my 13th birthday. I got my first electric guitar, a Fender Jaguar, for my 14th birthday while living in Hong Kong (my mom had gotten a Fulbright grant to teach there for a year), and that same year my first band, The New Breed, opened the show for Herman's Hermits! I seemed to get some attention for my ability to play the guitar solos from the Kingsmen's "Louie Louie" and the Rolling Stones' "Heart Of Stone" note for note! Eddie Duran

Eddie Duran was born 75 years ago in San Francisco into a musical family of Mexican heritage. “Our parents loved music and never objected to our following a musical career,” he says. Paul Desmond

Paul Desmond was revered for the pure, gentle tone of his alto saxophone, and the elegant lyricism of his improvisations. For seventeen years he was the lead soloist in the most commercially successful jazz combo ever, the Dave Brubeck Quartet. In an era that worshipped the frenetic, bebop style of Charlie Parker, Paul Desmond found his own sound, a tone that he claimed imitated a "dry martini." It was a sound that made him a favourite with critics and fans alike, and won him jazz poll after jazz poll. Dick Berk

Born: May 22, 1939

Richard Alan "Dick" Berk was an American jazz drummer and bandleader. Berk was born in San Francisco, California. He studied at the Berklee College of Music and played in the Boston area early in the 1960s. In 1962 he moved to New York City and played there with Ted Curson and Bill Barron in a quintet from 1962 to 1964. Following this he played with Charles Mingus, Mose Allison, Freddie Hubbard, and Walter Bishop, Jr., among others. He moved to Los Angeles late in the 1960s, where he played with Milt Jackson, George Duke, Cal Tjader, Jean-Luc Ponty, and Blue Mitchell. He founded the Jazz Adoption Agency in the early 1980s, playing into the 2000s; among this group's alumni are Andy Martin, Mike Fahn, Nick Brignola, John Nagorney, Keith Saunders, Tad Weed, and John Patitucci.

Gerald, born in Beaumont, Texas, started playing alto saxophone at the age of 11. As a freshman at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas he switched to playing the flute. During his years as an undergraduate at UNT he played with various local bands.
