Pino Palladino: The Craftsman from Wales

by Ludovico Granvassu
Refined craftsmanship is in small supply in today's music business, especially in the music business that fills sports arena or large music venues. Pino Palladino belongs to the small guild of refined craftsmen whose membership is reserved to musicians who do not seek the spotlight but pursue beauty through art, because that is what they were ...
Pino Palladino and Blake Mills: Notes with Attachments

by Chris May
Do not be put off by the cover. It might suggest inaccessible, up itself, bone-dry cerebralism, but the reality is contrariwise. Around a third of the music is vaguely reminiscent, in spirit if not in execution, of the 1949-1950 Birth Of The Cool sessions conducted by Miles Davis with arrangers Gil Evans, John Lewis, Gerry Mulligan ...
Pino Palladino: Eclettismo al Servizio della Musica

by Serena Antinucci

Free Association - Vol. 3 with John Murph

by Ludovico Granvassu
Free Association is a series of collaborative mix-tapes curated by Mondo Jazz in association with musicians and selectors of various origins. Free Association mix-tapes develop as a conversation. The first selector sends a tune cherry-picked to suit, and ideally surprise, the second selector who then, in turn, returns the favor. An hour or ...

Sam Gendel

Sam Gendel’s Nonesuch Records debut album, Satin Doll, will be released March 13, 2020. Recorded in Gendel’s native California, Satin Doll is a futuristic homage to historical jazz. The album features three musicians—Gendel on saxophone, Gabe Noel on electric bass, and Philippe Melanson on electronic percussion—engaging in simultaneous synchronized sonic construction/deconstruction of jazz standards, including Miles Davis’ “Freddie Freeloader,” Charles Mingus’ “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat,” and Duke Ellington’s “Satin Doll.” A Gendel-produced video for the album track “Afro Blue” by Mongo Santamaria may be seen below

Sam Wilkes: Wilkes

by Matt Hooke
A debut album by a bassist sometimes features displays of tremendous virtuosity, an attempt to expand the boundaries of an instrument often relegated to the background. Think of Jaco Pastorius's self-titled debut album. On Wilkes, LA session musician Sam Wilkes, best known for backing electronic duo Knowner, goes in the opposite direction, and that's what makes ...
Sam Gendel: Pass If Music

by Mark Sullivan
Los Angeles-based alto saxophonist Sam Gendel produced every sound on this album live, using only his saxophone. But you would be unlikely to think so after hearing it. Opening track Anemone Swerve" sounds like an outtake by trumpeter Jon Hassell--returning the favor for Hassell's reedy, somewhat saxophone-like trumpet sound. Gendel also favors the same sort of ...
