MUSICIAN Born:

Ryan Burns

Musician/Teacher Ryan Burns is best-known for his jazz piano and Fender Rhodes-based keyboard work, having produced five CD’s as a bandleader, and dozens of projects as one of Seattle’s hardest working sidemen. Studied at Berklee School of Music, Burns has always been drawn to the worlds of jazz and rock, and those places where both meet. Employing the analog sounds of the Rhodes, Wurlitzer, Hammond, and Moog, Burns has a signature sound that has made it’s mark in groups such as Harrybu McCage (led by Pearl Jam/Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron), Matt Jorgensen +451, Bebop and Destruction, Thomas Marriott’s Willie Nelson Project, Zero-Goose, and others

Rick Mandyck: The Return From Now

Read "Rick Mandyck: The Return From Now" reviewed by Paul Rauch

It was a cold Tuesday evening the last week of December. 2016 was mercifully coming to a close, this evening, a final chorus of a long blues blown soulfully, and mournfully into the night. I sat at the bar at Seattle's storied jazz spot, Tula's, in eager anticipation of the evening's performance of a quartet led ...

Ray Vega & Thomas Marriott: Return of the East-West Trumpet Summit

Read "Return of the East-West Trumpet Summit" reviewed by Dan McClenaghan

Seattle-based trumpeter Thomas Marriott plays well with electricity. Specifically, with the Hammond B3 organ. The most memorable of his now nine CDs on Origin Records feature either the Hammond B3 or some serious Moog synthesier/Fender Rhodes work: Crazy: The Music of Willie Nelson (2007 ), with Ryan Burns on electric keys; Human Spirit (2009), featuring Gary ...

Brad Gibson: Poontet

Read "Poontet" reviewed by Hrayr Attarian

Seattle drummer Brad Gibson's second release as a leader Poontet is a spicy batch of soulful grooves that belong on the soundtrack of a 1970s gritty detective film. Heavily reliant on electric instrumentation and densely atmospheric these half a dozen tracks are short on improvisational rigor without being mundane. They also allow for some soloing room ...

Human Spirit: Dialogue

Read "Dialogue" reviewed by Dan McClenaghan

The three players who now call themselves Human Spirit--drummer Matt Jorgensen, trumpeter Thomas Marriott and alto saxophonist Mark Taylor--have a very successful track record of recording together. They teamed up on Jorgensen's magnificent Tattooed by Passion (2010) and Another Morning (2008), and on Marriott's strange and splendid Crazy: The Music of Willie Nelson (2008) and Flexicon ...

Matt Jorgensen: Tattooed by Passion: Music Inspired by the Paintings of Dale Chisman

Read "Tattooed by Passion: Music Inspired by the Paintings of Dale Chisman" reviewed by Dan McClenaghan

Drummer Matt Jorgensen pushes a bit out of the relative comfort zone of his longstanding Matt Jorgensen + 451 ensemble, to pay homage to his late father-in-law, abstract expressionist painter Dale Chisman, with Tattooed by Passion. With his + 451 group, Jorgensen crafted a distinctive modern-leaning sound on CDs Hope (Origin Records, 2004) and Another Morning ...

Keyboardist Ryan Burns possesses a distinctive artistry, one that is integral to the success of the sound of the Matt Jorgensen + 451 group on sets such as Hope (Origin Records, 2004) and Another Morning (Origin Records, 2008), and with trumpeter Thomas Marriott on the strange and stellar Crazy:The Music of Willie Nelson (Origin Records, 2008). ...
