Shai Maestro

Born: February 5, 1987

Shai Maestro (1987) is one of the most promising and talented pianists of his generation. Since his debut with his own trio in 2011, Shai has shaped a strong and unique personal identity and has portrayed an incredible musical fluidity, making Shai and his band one of the most powerful and harmonious groups in the jazz today. 2018 marked an important year for Shai, signing with major jazz label ECM and recording his first album “The Dream Thief” there, featuring his trio, but also him as a solo-pianist. Introspective, lyrical, virtuosic and differentiated. In its review of ‘The Dream Thief’, All About Jazz spoke of “a searching lyrical atmosphere, emotional eloquence and communal virtuosity that serves the music.” All of which also applies to ‘Human’, Shai’s latest release on ECM, where Maestro’s outgoing, highly-communicative band with fellow Israeli Ofri Nehemya on drums and Peruvian bassist Jorge Roeder becomes a quartet with the inspired addition of US trumpeter Philip Dizack

Rembrandt Frerichs

Rembrandt (1977) is a pianist with a broad perspective. Focussing his energy on ideas that are meaningful to him, his artistic journey constantly deepens into new territories. Having played with Michael Brecker aged only 25 and playing a double bill concert with Chick Corea in London, Rembrandt is familiar with American jazz tradition, but he wants to avoid the well-trodden path. Rembrandt's knowledge of the art music of different parts of the world urge his music to develop continously, pushing the limits of classical, improvised and worldmusic. Michele Franzini

Jazz pianist, composer, arranger, while studying classical music (piano, with Izabela Zielonka, harmony and counterpoint), he performed in national piano competitions with brilliant results. Later, he began developing his personal sound, studying jazz and performing as a soloist, composer and arranger in many groups in Italy, recording or playing, among others, with Fabrizio Bosso, Emanuele Cisi, Andrea Dulbecco, Tiziana Ghiglioni, Piero Leveratto, Tito Mangialajo Rantzer, Massimo Manzi, Mauro Negri, Massimo Pintori, Ralph Alessi, Steve Hobbs, Brian Lynch, Lee Konitz, Francisco Mela. In jazz clubs, festivals and concert halls, he had the opportunity to express himself within several different kind of situations, from big band to duo, from traditional jazz to free forms, becoming a well-appreciated teacher, too.

Paul Read

Born: February 11, 1948

PAUL READ (pianist, saxophonist, bandleader, composer, arranger, educator) was born on February 11, 1948 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. In addition to earning graduate and undergraduate degrees in music and education at the University of Toronto, he also studied arranging and composition with Gordon Delamont and composition with John Beckwith. He also attended Berklee College of Music in Boston studying saxophone with Joe Viola and arranging with Ted Pease. Read leads the 18-piece big band PRO (Paul Read Orchestra) composing and arranging as well as playing saxophone for the band. He also leads the Paul Read Quartet (with Barry Elmes, Kieran Overs, and Scott Robinson) playing piano and composing with that ensemble, and is also pianist and arranger for the (vocalist) Trish Colter Sextet

Sullivan Fortner

Born: December 29, 1986

For the past decade, Sullivan Fortner has been stretching deep-rooted talents as a pianist, composer, band leader and uncompromising individualist. The GRAMMY Award-winning artist out of New Orleans received international praise as both key player and producer for his collaborative work on The Window, alongside Cecile McLorin Salvant. As a solo leader, he has released Moments Preserved and Aria to critical acclaim.

In addition to associations with such diverse voices as Wynton Marsalis, Paul Simon, Diane Reeves, Etienne Charles and John Scofield, Fortner’s frequent and longtime collaborators have included Ambrose Akinmusire, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Stefon Harris, Kassa Overall, Tivon Pennicott, Peter Bernstein, Nicholas Payton, Billy Hart, Gary Bartz, Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, Fred Hersch and the late Roy Hargrove. Recent collaborations include GRAMMY-nominated releases Dear Love (Empress Legacy) and Generations from leaders Jazzmeia Horn and The Baylor Project, respectively.

I offer individualized piano, classical guitar, singing instruction for both children and adults. Students may learn classical or popular repertoire, proper technique, effective practicing, keyboard theory and music history.

I've been teaching since 1986 and currently teach 15-20 students in private homes. I am a patient teacher who enjoys helping each student achieve his/her individual potential. I enjoy the challenge of helping students understand notation, rhythm and harmony.

My main teaching goal is for my students to enjoy making music.I provide my students with a comprehensive learning experience that helps them to develop their full musical potential. Also, I try to make the learning process fun so that my students enjoy playing instruments and look forward to their lessons each week!

Jo-Yu Chen

Jo-Yu Chen’s fourth trio album “Savage Beauty,” featuring special guest saxophonist Mark Turner, has been released on March 15, 2019 by Sony Music. She is the first Taiwanese jazz artist signed to a major record label, and has also joined the distinguished international roster of Steinway Artists. 

The title composition "Savage Beauty" was in memory of the British avant-garde fashion designer Alexander McQueen. “Musically, I’ve always wanted to express myself as delicate, dramatic, and playful but ultra-powerful. McQueen mixed strength and fragility to create a picture of an empowered woman warrior who is ultra-feminine yet powerful. I found myself deeply resonating with McQueen’s aesthetic approach and the dark romanticism of his style. I also respect how he challenged the market by staying true to himself as an artist in such a commercial and consumer lead fashion industry. “, says Chen. 

Wintz

Born: January 8, 1966

Pascal Wintz was born in 1966 in the French Alps near the beautiful city of Annecy. After obtaining his diplomas for piano jazz and composition from the Conservatoire Populaire de Genève, Pascal Wintz turned towards classical music, obtaining the prize "Gabriela de Agostini" and entered the class of virtuosity at the Conservatoire Supérieur de Paris. "First of all, I learned to improvise on the piano in pure jazz-man style and gave my first jazz concerts", he asserts. "Then, I studied the extremely demanding discipline of classical music. Whilst studying in Paris, I interpreted the Beethoven's 3rd Concerto with the Cities University Symphony Orchestra". Pascal Wintz then made a start giving classical recitals: The United Stated Foundation in Paris, The French Alliance in Denver, The Red Cross Museum in Geneva, Paquet Cruises on the Mediterranean Sea, a tour with the Orchestra of the Savoy Region of France. When his first passion caught up with him, Pascal Wintz introduced jazz into his recitals and presented a cocktail of music from Bach to Duke Ellington. Inspired by American Musical Comedies and 1930's Jazz, he found a repertoire which suited his musical talents. Born in Brooklyn, NY, 1934. Studied with jazz great Teddy Wilson. Played with jazz groups around New York City until moving to Los Angeles in 1960. Did studio work as pianist, arranger and conductor through 1993. Played on ABC Orchestra 1964-1970, then NBC Orchestra thereafter. Was alternate pianist on "The Tonight Show" with Doc Sevrinsen's band 1974-1983, as well as arranger/conductor/music supervisor on Bob Hope's TV specials through 1992. Was orchestra leader on "Name That Tune" for 167 shows, both syndicated and on NBC mornings. Retired to Hilton Head, SC in 1993 and resumed career as jazz pianist.Early work included the big bands of Charlie Spivak, Jerry Gray, Louis Prima, Buddy Morrow, Les Brown
