About the Album
While pianist/composer Satoko Fujii is a master of many forms of solo and small-group jazz and new music, her large ensemble compositions are especially powerful. So it’s great news that this year she’ll be releasing no fewer than five big band records. The first one finds her collaborating with Germany’s Bunker Ulmenwall Orchestra in a recently rediscovered 2014 live recording. The entire first CD is devoted to a rare live performance of her epic piece “Shiki.” For the second disc, compositions by members of the orchestra are featured along with another Fujii piece and a composition by her husband, trumpeter Natsuki Tamura. “Yamantaka” is a composition by bass saxophonist Andreas Kaling, whose astounding solo is also a major moment on “Shiki.” The rock-leaning “Yamantaka” is built around an unforgettable riff with a burning solo by guitarist Lucy Liebe.
