David Frankel
Early signs of musicality led to classical piano lessons and later a music degree at Leeds University. Though exposed from an early age to the sounds of Oscar Peterson, Dave Brubeck, George Shearing and Ramsey Lewis through my parents' record collection I displayed a fierce resistance to improvising until my mid-20s when I heard Bill Evans for the first time. After a couple of years of evening classes at Morley College (thank you Roland and Simon) I attended the postgrad course at the Guildhall, leaving there in 1991. I've been a freelancer ever since, appearing in various outfits including duos with saxophonists Mark Ramsden and Pat Crumly, and quartets led by drummer Paul Cavaciuti and trombonist Mark Bassey, amongst all the other ad-hoc stuff
