Joshua Bowlus

Born:

Growing up in Port Orange, FL as the oldest of three siblings, Joshua Bowlus started piano lessons at age five. He trained classically throughout his childhood with private lessons at Stetson University until he began high school. He credits both his high school band director Andrew Kidd and local pianist and teacher Harold Blanchard for sparking his interest in jazz, introducing him to the legendary sounds of masters such as Ahmad Jamal, Oscar Peterson, Thelonious Monk and more. Bowlus was awarded the Louis Armstrong award in high school and continued his music education at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, studying under pianists Kevin Bales & Keith Javors. The head of the UNF jazz department and legendary alto saxophonist Bunky Green served as Joshua’s primary mentor through his later years in college. Since graduating from college in 2006, he has built his musical career as a jazz pianist in the Southeast region, as both bandleader and sideman for various groups and artists.

Musician

Katie Elliott

Classically trained as a flautist and pianist, Katie has been writing and performing music since an early age. After studying at Dartington College of Arts and Newnham College, Cambridge, where she learned to love Balinese gamelan music (the former) and 20th Century Polish fiction (the latter), she began writing children's music books for Usborne Publishing and Boosey & Hawkes. Unsurprisingly though, devising ways of making music theory memorable using a limited repertoire of cartoon animals soon took its toll and, before she knew it, she had enrolled in a jazz workshop. From there it was a small step to forming her own band (of which there have been many) and inveigling her way into other people's when they weren't looking

Musician

Kevin Bales

Kevin’s initial career move was to the University of North Florida and a budding if little-known jazz program. Giants like Wynton Marsalis, Louie Bellson, Eddie Daniels, James Moody, Ben Tucker, Ira Sullivan, Sam Rivers, and Nat Adderley. He counts among his mentors bassist Ben Tucker, multi-instrumentalist Ira Sullivan, guitar legends Nathen Page and Jack Petersen, and the fiercely individual saxophonist Bunky Green. Musician

Pascal Mohy

Pascal Mohy, 31 years old in the year 2011, could have lived 75 years ago. Or even more. His romantic air echoes the spirit of freedom of a young Berlioz or Hugo with an added flash of humour in his eye and a breezy smile. His music, however, is directly linked to the racy elegance of Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn and Count Basie. It’s no accident that his 2008 album “Automne 08” features a version of “Prelude to a Kiss” by the Duke. But Pascal is not stuck in the sophisticated thirties. His piano playing also embraces musical touches from Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane and he readily listens to Jarrett and Mehldau
