Pete Levin

In a diverse music career spanning several decades, keyboardist/arranger Pete Levin has performed and recorded with hundreds of Jazz and Pop artists - including Paul Simon, Annie Lennox, Miles Davis, David Sanborn, Lenny White, Wayne Shorter, Jaco Pastorius, Robbie Robertson and John Scofield - receiving critical accolades for his work during a 15 year association with the legendary Gil Evans, and his 8 year stint with jazz icon Jimmy Giuffre. Says Levin, “What I got from Gil was the unshakable notion that playing music was to create from a place where there are no boundaries. If it can be imagined then it can be done.” With “DEACON BLUES,” for Motema Music, Pete re-emerged in 2007 as a band leader and master of reinvention, embracing his roots and first love, the Hammond Organ

The Gil Evans Orchestra: Hidden Treasures Vol. 1, Monday Nights

Read "Hidden Treasures Vol. 1, Monday Nights" reviewed by Jerome Wilson

In the '70s composer and arranger Gil Evans, after years of outstanding studio arranging for Miles Davis and others, put together a performing orchestra which took influences from the jazz-rock and fusion concepts of the time. That orchestra released several fine albums such as Svengali (Atlantic, 1973) and There Comes A Time (RCA, 1975) and, on ...

Gil Evans Orchestra: Hidden Treasures - Monday Night Sessions, vol 1

Read "Hidden Treasures - Monday Night Sessions, vol 1" reviewed by Angelo Leonardi

John Clark: The Odd Couple Quintet +1

Read "The Odd Couple Quintet +1" reviewed by Angelo Leonardi

John Clark: The Odd Couple Quintet +1

Read "The Odd Couple Quintet +1" reviewed by Budd Kopman

Yes, it is true that French horn and bassoon are not commonplace instruments in jazz. Attempts have been made to use them, of course, most recently by Julian Schneemann on Roundabout, but in that work, they were used more as colors in the mix. What is unusual is for these instruments to be in the ...

John Clark: The Odd Couple Quintet +1

Read "The Odd Couple Quintet +1" reviewed by Jack Bowers

"And now," as John Cleese used to intone on the Monty Python television series, “for something completely different." In this case, a jazz quintet (+1) sporting a front line of French horn and bassoon and performing, among other things, two horn concertos by Mozart. An odd coupling? At first blush, it would seem so. Far less ...

The Odd Couple Quintet +1 By John Clark

John Clark French horn CD Release on Composers Concordance Records “Virtually every French horn student starts playing the Mozart Concerti at a young age. I think I was 11 or 12 when I first attempted them, and even then I wanted to improvise on them. I had no idea what 'jazz' or 'creative music' was, but ...

Deborah Winters: Lovers After All

Read "Lovers After All" reviewed by Dan Bilawsky

Placing vocalists under a specific, descriptive heading can be limiting in some ways, but it also shines a light on their greatest strengths. Singer Joe Williams--of Count Basie fame--resented being labeled as a “blues singer," since he possessed great range and felt that this tag had suggestions of racism behind it; few would argue, however, that ...
