Mario Pavone: Blue Vertical
by John Sharpe
There is an inevitably tinge of sadness to Blue Vertical. Not because of any particular flavor of the music, but because, along with Isabella (Clean Feed, 2021) it's one of two final releases by bassist Mario Pavone, who died aged 80 less than two months after this March 2021 recording session. Pavone began his career in ...
The Pandemic Sessions: Duos, Part 1
by Mark Corroto
After the initial shock of the COVID-19 crisis and subsequent lockdown, artists did what artists do. Unable to tour, many musicians created solo projects. Musicians, like other sentient beings though, crave contact, so when some of the most severe restrictions lifted, duos were formed and production returned. These small positive steps (note: some were recorded before ...
Mario Pavone / Dialect Trio +1: Blue Vertical
by Karl Ackermann
Bassist and composer Mario Pavone died on May 15, 2021, after a seventeen-year battle with cancer. The Connecticut native had many interests and earned a degree in engineering, a Doris Duke Foundation grant and, for a quarter-century, shared his wisdom and talent with kids at the Litchfield Performing Arts Jazz Camp, where he also served as ...
Tim Berne / Matt Mitchell: Spiders
by John Sharpe
In spite, or perhaps because, of the lull in work in 2020, alto saxophonist and composer Tim Berne maintained a busy release schedule. Spiders, his third set of duets with pianist Matt Mitchell, arrives hot on the heels of The Fantastic Mrs 10 (Intakt) and The Deceptive 4 Live (Intakt), both by his band Snakeoil which ...

The MacroQuarktet: The Complete Night: Live At The Stone NYC
by John Sharpe
The Complete Night presents forward looking trumpeters Herb Robertson and Dave Ballou in a series of long form improvisations from NYC venue The Stone in 2007, in a foursome with bassist Drew Gress and drummer Tom Rainey. The first set was previously issued as Each Part A Whole on Robertson's Ruby Flower imprint, but in its ...
The MacroQuarktet: The Complete Night: Live At The Stone NYC
by Mark Corroto
Listening to The MacroQuarktet calls to mind comedians Robin Williams and Jonathan Winters. Did they warm up before an evening of improvisational comedy? Once on stage or a TV talk show, instantaneously they were 'on,' firing a superabundance of thoughts, jokes, impressions, etc at their audience. It is the same for the two improvised music sets ...
