Steve Davis: Say When
by Maurizio Zerbo
Wadada Leo Smith & John Lindberg: Celestial Weather
by Dan McClenaghan
Trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith, one of the original AACM artists and a major avant-garde artist in his own right, is perhaps best known of late for his highly ambitious, monumental orchestral works--Ten Freedom Summers (Cuneiform Records, 2013) and Occupy the World (TUM Records, 2013). In 2014 he turned this approach down a bit--using using an all-star ...
Carol Fredette at Jazz at Kitano
by Nick Catalano
Carol Fredette Jazz at Kitano New York, NY November 19, 2015 Jazz at Kitano, the club in Gotham's Kitano Hotel on Park Ave. and 38th St., continues to grow in popularity with artists and audiences alike -the former avidly competing for the best dates and the latter chatting ...
Slobber Pup: Pole Axe
by Mark Corroto
Imagine the avant improv metal trio Slobber Pup, which is made up of keyboardist Jamie Saft, guitarist Joe Morris, and drummer Balazs Pandi, crafting a homemade greeting card that says, “you complete us" to give to Mats Gustafsson. As heartwarming and moving as that gesture is, the inclusion of the Swedish saxophonist on the trio's sophomore ...
Ivo Perelman/Matthew Shipp: Complementary Colors
by Mark Corroto
When a new batch of Ivo Perelman discs are released, yes he releases music from multiple groups on multiple discs, it is always wise to start with his duets with pianist Matthew Shipp. They've collaborated now for over twenty years, in duo, trio, quartet, and quintet settings. Their development of sound, each player's individual sound, has ...
Guitarist Maciek Pysz Releases New CD "A Journey" on Dot Time Records
Often compared to Pat Metheny and Al Di Meola, London/Paris-based guitarist Maciek Pysz released his new album A Journey, on October 15, 2015 (Dot Time Records). Recorded in December 2014 at the famous Artesuono studio in Italy, the album features the celebrated Daniele Di Bonaventura on piano and bandoneon along with bassist Yuri Goloubev and drummer ...
Fred Hersch: Solo
by Maurizio Zerbo
Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra: Big Band Holidays
by Jack Bowers
The holiday season has its ups and downs on Big Band Holidays, recorded live over two Decembers (2013-14) by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, which is without a doubt one of the finest big bands money can buy. Even though the most recent number on the album ("Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas") was recorded ...
Omer Avital: New Song
by Neri Pollastri
by Alan Bryson
Sweden's Carl Mörner Ringström is not the first musician I've interviewed whose parents were music teachers, but there the similarities end. He got his first electric guitar at the age of seven, and although his father is a classical guitarist, the son was determined to master the instrument on his own. He spent the next four ...
