Vezhlivy Otkaz

Active since:
“Vezhlivy Otkaz, which means “polite refusal” in English, is one of the most original and erratic rock bands in Russia. It was formed in 1985 with a then-popular reggae/ska blend. Since then, they have gone through numerous stylistic changes, flirting with everything from free jazz to Russian folk. Their sound, however, has always been unique and immediately recognizable. Roman Suslov’s rhythmic guitar work and unusual high-pitched vocals gives VO’s music a precisely constructed, crystal-clear sound that is completely devoid of any of the extra noise so typical of rock-n-roll. The sound is so well organized that sounds almost academic.” Artemy Troitsky @ “Moscow Times”) “Some imprints of various music styles from Prokofiev to tango nuevo and Soviet songs might be found in the music of Geese and Swans

Yuriy Matveyev

Born:
Yuriy hails from an unnamed village in Siberia, which was settled solely by the Matveyev family in the early 1500s. Their location was so remote that it lost contact with the rest of humanity until the mid-20th century. At that time, the Matveyev homestead was slated to serve as a nuclear testing site. Fortunately, scientists came out to the area to set up cameras and instruments before conducting the first explosion, and discovered that the land was actually inhabited.
Yuriy's generation was the first to be re-integrated into Russian society. Frustrated by the language barrier (the entire clan spoke an unintelligible, anachronistic dialect), young Yuriy took a vow of silence which he has kept to this day

Jazzator

The band Jazzator marries the freedom of jazz to the harmonic vocabulary of contemporary art music and adds the vigor of stadium rock to the mixture. The music of the band often shifts from the mainstream to the vanguard within one song and is based on powerful use of non-conventional vocal parties and rich piano arrangements. The tunes composed by Marina for piano, vocals and drums constitute the most important part of the band’s repertoire. These pieces were inspired by such artists as The Bad Plus, Thelonious Monk, Avishai Cohen, Sergei Rachmaninov and Igor Stravinsky. The core of the band consists of Marina Sobyanina (vocals, piano, composer) and Sergey Balashov (drums) but Jazzator’s live performances as well as the bands’ studio records always feature various guest musicians playing double bass, clarinet, cello, violin, bass-clarinet, flute and other instruments
