François Richard

François Richard was born October 9, 1956. His father is a photographer and his mother a musician. François Richard inherited of a sound musical education. At the age of 10, he had the privilege to be tutored by the great master of classical music Jean-Pierre Rampal, and his student from the Conservatoire de Paris, Gail Grimstead. In 1970 he studied flute with professor Jean-Paul Major and piano at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Montréal. In his early twenties, he founded L'Orchestre Sympathique with Jean Vanasse, vibraphonist, and obtained the Premier Prix du Conseil canadien de la musique - First Prize at the Canadian Music Council

Alex Bellegarde

Energetic player, composer and Grand Jazz Award winner at the Montreal Jazz Festival, 26th ed, Alex Bellegarde creates music drawn from a wealth of sources. Alto saxophonist and improviser François Carrier is definitely going his own way. Carrier singular vision has led him to maintain a wide recorded presence all over the world. His rich, deep playing that blends lyricism with boldness and a sense of surpassing one’s self has earned him a place in the Annual International Critic’s Poll of El Intruso of El Intruso 2018, 2017 as well as 2015 and in the DownBeat’s 2013 Best Alto Sax Players List. In 2001 he won a Juno Award in the Best Contemporary Jazz Album category for his third album Compassion (Naxos Jazz). Franklin Kiermyer

Born: July 21, 1956

Drummer/composer Franklin Kiermyer first came to prominence following the release of Solomon's Daughter, his highly acclaimed third album that features John Coltrane alumnus Pharoah Sanders on saxophone. Widely regarded for his intense passionate energy, spiritual feeling and distinctive sound, his nine albums and many performances have brought his music international recognition. Paul Bley

Born: November 10, 1932

"Since the Montreal-born, long-US resident Bley's 50's debut with Mingus and Blakey, he's worked with more first-rate, wide ranging original musical minds than anyone but Miles..." —Howard Mandel, Downbeat, April 1995

Bley gave violin recitals at age five. By age seven he was studying piano. He went through numerous classical teachers—including one Frenchman that had him play, balancing filled water glasses on the tops of his hands. At age 11 he graduated from the McGill Conservatory—having taken on their musical curriculum in addition to his public school education. Bley, who was known as "Buzzy" in his early adolescence, formed a band and played clubs and summer hotel jobs in the Laurentian Mountains at age 13. Four years later he replaced Oscar Peterson at the Alberta Lounge. Bley founded the Montreal Jazz Workshop and brought Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins, Brew Moore and Alan Eager to Montreal inorder to perform with them.

Guido Basso

Born: September 27, 1937

Guido Basso (trumpet, flugelhorn, harmonica, conductor, arranger and composer) was born in Montreal in 1937. Guido was only nine years old when he began playing the trumpet, becoming recognized as a prodigy while studying at Montreal’s Conservatoire de musique du Quebec. He was just a teenager when he was already becoming prominent on the Montreal club scene, where singer Vic Damone first heard him and took him on an international tour with him for two years.

In 1958 he joined singer Pearl Bailey and her bandleader husband, famed drummer Louis Bellson, touring North America with them for three years before moving to Toronto to join the busy studio and television scene there. His playing career as stan-out sidemand and leader, soared, and he became one ot the biggest jazz names in the country, and beginning in 1975, frequently organized and led big band concerts at toronto’s Canadian National Exhibition featuring jazz luminaries including Dizzy Gillespie, Quincy Jones, Woody Herman, Duke Ellington and Count Basie. He can be heard on hundreds of record albums, CD’s, playing and recording with stars from Buddy Rich to Diana Krall.

Jeannette Lambert

Born: June 15

Inspired by her jazz-loving parents and childhood addresses that spanned the globe, Ms. Lambert began singing professionally in coffee shops at the age of 12. Mentored by veterans of the Montreal jazz scene, including trumpeter Herbie Spanier, and influenced by the diverse vocal traditions of flamenco, fado, and jaipong, she grew up playing in professional jam sessions with visiting artists such as vocalist Jon Hendricks. She would go on to further refine her musical style studying with vocalist Jay Clayton, the legendary Cecil Taylor and others at the Banff Jazz Workshop

Michel Lambert

Born to a family synonymous with classical music in his native Quebec, Lambert studied drums and composition at Boston's Berklee College of Music, attended workshops in Paris, and studied privately with saxophonist/composer Dave Liebman in New York and pianist/ composer Misha Mengelberg in Amsterdam. Since his first professional engagement with pianist/composer Milcho Leviev's trio in 1983, he has recorded extensively and performed hroughout Asia, Canada, Europe and the United States. Accomplished as both a composer and visual artist, excerpts from his first orchestral work, “Le Journal Des Episodes,” were premiered in 1992 by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and his oil paintings earned him a commission from the Canada Council to illustrate a 4-CD compilation of Canadian music to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the United Nations

Min Rager

Born: February 4, 1975

Min Rager Biography Min Rager is one of Canada’s premier female jazz pianists and composers. Born in Seoul, Korea, she moved to Montreal in 1997 to pursue a professional music career. She holds her Master’s degree in Jazz Performance from the Schulich school of music at McGill University graduating with the distinction of “ Outstanding achievement in Jazz Piano”. At the Montreal International Jazz Festival in 2005 her Quintet was nominated for the “Grand prix de jazz General Motors”. Also that year, Min was the recipient of the “ Best new Artist” award from Montreal’s L’OFF Festival de Jazz. In 2008, Min received a commission from CBC to compose a jazz suite for 2 pianos
