Machine Mass
MACHINE MASS feat. DAVE LIEBMAN pairs the legendary saxophonist (Miles Davis, Elvin Jones...) with longtime collaborator drummer Tony Bianco (Elton Dean, Paul Dunmall, Evan Parker, douBt) and guitarist Michel Delville (The Wrong Object, douBt, Comicoperando). Graced by Dave Liebman's extraordinary phrasing and improvising skills, "INTI" combines free improvisation with tight rhythmic structures, post-Bitches Brew time signatures with ambient episodes, spreading across different musical and spiritual realities, both playfully and intensely. The band ventures into the fiery electro-jazz territories explored by Bianco and Delville's recent Machine Mass Trio, which also showcased both musicians' capacity to listen closely and improvise over unpredictable chord, rhythm and time changes while handling live electronics and computer loops. Recorded live in the studio with no overdubs (in just one afternoon, no less!), this monumental session bears witness to three seasoned musicians in top form - producing music that is fresh, challenging, profound and moving
Machine Mass: Inti
by John Kelman
One of music's most remarkable qualities is its ability to provide a context for expression of otherwise indescribable feelings. The genesis of Machine Mass Trio came at a time of duress for Tony Bianco, the expat American drummer who, since relocating to Europe in the mid-1990s, has performed with A-list improvising musicians including Elton Dean, Evan ...

Leonardo Pavkovic: Nothing is Ordinary
by Chris M. Slawecki
More than any other person, Leonardo Pavkovic has made me write some crazy shit. Pavkovic is the primal force behind the joyously eclectic MoonJune Records, which he established in 2001. Established" may not be the right word: I am truly an unusual and rules breaking call-it-record-company with a 'label' identity despite the fact that ...

John Kelman's Best Releases of 2017
by John Kelman
For those who may have noticed, there have been no best of lists coming from yours truly since 2014; sadly, the chronic health problem that has reduced my previous writing pace to a crawl continues without much respite. My best of the year lists have always been predicated upon having reviewed the releases chosen, and with ...
Mark Sullivan's Best Releases of 2017
by Mark Sullivan
No genre breakdown this year. I've included every release that I rated at 4.5 stars or better, plus a number of 4 star reviews (that was the hard part, as there were lots of those). ECM had an exceptionally strong year, and I had trouble limiting my selection even this much. This is a chronological list, ...
Machine Mass: Plays Hendrix
by Mark Sullivan
Belgian trio Machine Mass returns with a creative take on the music of a rock icon: guitarist/composer Jimi Hendrix. Founding members guitarist Michel Delville and American drummer Tony Bianco are joined this time by keyboardist Antoine Guenet, who proves to be a perfect partner. The duo was filled out by reed player Jordi Grognard on their ...

Machine Mass feat. Dave Liebman: Inti
by Neri Pollastri
