Calixto Oviedo Band

Born:

Born in Cuba, Calixto Oviedo's career spans 38 years. He started his musical studies when he was eight years old at the Caturla Music School in Havana, later graduating from the National School of the Arts, where he played with many different bands and several soon to be famous Cuban musicians. He also was NG La Banda’s drummer during the period that produced their greatest recordings. In the mid-90's, Oviedo became an independent musician and relocated to Sweden, where he became Europe’s drummer of choice on bands and groups playing all genres, from classical jazz to timba. After years of participating as drummer and/or percussionist in dozens of recordings, Oviedo is currently a member of the music faculty at the California State University at Los Angeles (CSULA) as a percussion professor where he is fulfilling a long standing dream, to direct, perform and record a CD with his own modern version of legendary Jelly Roll Morton’s “Latin tinge.” "Calixto Oviedo is the sole creator of the latest grooves in popular Cuban music, what we know as Timba, with the integration of timbales and drumset

Member of the NIU Jazz Ensemble. Toured with many greats with this group including Ed Thigpen, Jimmy Heath, Frank Foster and Benny Golson. Received a Masters Degree from Western Michigan University. Member of the WMU Gold Company Ensemble. Performed with Bobby McFerrin and Janis Siegel with this group. Member of Chicago fusion band, The Renegades, featured on the Duncannon Shenanigan recording. Member of the Chicago rock band, Deadstockaudio, featured on their self titled release. Performed on Good Day New York with American Idol finalist Pia Toscano. Toured Central and South America with Mexican Pop Star Cristian Castro. Toured the Ukraine and Russia with Russian rockstars Mumiy Troll. Released first recording of original music, Innerplay.

Produced by Scotty Barnhart, GRAMMY (c) Award-Winning Director of the Count Basie Orchestra and Associate Professor of Music at Florida State University, the album features pianist Tamir Hendelman, GRAMMY (c) Award-winning bassist Carlitos Del Puerto, drummer Clayton Cameron, guitarist Anthony Wilson, and percussionist Kevin Winard.

Jason Fabus is enjoying a wonderful journey as a highly sought-after professional saxophonist throughout Southern California. This Milwaukee native is the leader of several groups, including his quintet, "The Fabus Five" and is a regular performer at Disneyland. Ryan Shaw

Ryan Shaw began his musical pursuits at the age of five on piano. By age 8, he began studying with Steve Noyd on percussion. After getting his first drum set at the age of 10, he began playing at his church regularly while participating in his school’s Band and Jazz Band. Ryan then moved with his family to San Diego, California where he began attending Poway High School and participating in their Marching and Jazz Bands. He was also selected as the drummer for the SCSBOA Honor Jazz Band in 2013. Ryan is now pursuing his Jazz Studies degree at the University of Southern California, studying under Peter Erskine. Outside of school, Ryan performs regularly with Gilbert Castellanos and Joshua White, and has had the opportunity to perform with Bob Sheppard, Bob McChesney, Graham Dechter, Rob Lockhart, Joshua White, Holly Hofmann, Mike Wofford and more

VINCENT HECKARD is a percussionist and drummer specializing in World and Latin Percussion. For more than 20 years, Vincent has brought his flare and exuberance to performances and recordings with distinguished bands, entertainment companies, and solo artists. His wide-ranging musical experience includes forays into Brazilian and second line music, as well as jazz, funk, pop, bluegrass, West African, and hip hop styles. Vincent was trained by Master Percussionist Ron Powell and instructed by Jose Luis "Changuito" Quintana, Jesus Diaz, Michael Spiro, Robertito Melendez, Troy Parker, and the late Malonga Casquelourd. Thundercat is the alter ego of virtuosic bassist / singer Stephen Bruner. The South Los Angeles-native has released two critically acclaimed full length albums on Brainfeeder Records since 2011, and last year saw the release of widely praised mini-album The Beyond / Where the Giants Roam. The album features appearances from the legendary Herbie Hancock, fellow Brainfeeder family members Kamasi Washington, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and Mono/Poly and production work from Brainfeeder head, Flying Lotus. 2015 also saw Thundercat make outstanding contributions to landmark albums by Kamasi Washington (The Epic) and Kendrick Lamar (To Pimp A Butterfly)

About Red Hill Quartet The Red Hill Quartet is an eclectic Los Angeles-based jazz group comprised of top musicians from varied backgrounds who have come together to create the music they want to play. The members bring the influences of African, Indian, and Middle Eastern music while being solidly entrenched in the jazz tradition. This unique blend, coupled with an all original repertoire, has generated enthusiastic response from traditional jazz audiences as well as those who never considered themselves jazz fans. For this reason, the band has been very successful in reaching younger music fans. The Red Hill Quartet originated in the 1990s as a quintet called Red Hill and formed by saxophonist Harvey Lane and vibes player Ricky Luther
