The Jazz Innovator: Jerald Miller

Read "The Jazz Innovator: Jerald Miller" reviewed by B.D. Lenz

It's understood that talent alone is rarely enough to be successful in the music business. Among other things, it requires drive, relentless hard work, resilience, and a certain level of business acumen. But, in the last few decades, it's become increasingly important to be tech-savvy as well. To highlight the difference, could you imagine Miles Davis ...

Kenny Garrett Speaks Through The Soul of His Jazz

Read "Kenny Garrett Speaks Through The Soul of His Jazz" reviewed by Dean Nardi

Mental bungee-jumping may not be their sport of choice, but a cerebral ledge exists that sooner or later every jazz musician must leap off. One day, ready or not, tuning up or shaking down their instrument, they will glance in a mirror, hug a pregnant mother-to-be, second-line a funeral, walk in the deepest, dark woods, chance ...

Brandee Younger: I'm Done Running From The Harp Police

Read "Brandee Younger: I'm Done Running From The Harp Police" reviewed by Leo Sidran

When it comes to instruments that are not easily designed for improvising soloists, there is perhaps none more difficult to handle than the harp. And when it comes to contemporary jazz harpists, there is perhaps none more influential in this moment than Brandee Younger. From the very beginning, as a young music student growing ...

Brandee Younger: Soul Awakening

Read "Soul Awakening" reviewed by Serena Antinucci

Michael Leonhart: Suite Extracts Vol. 1

Read "Suite Extracts Vol. 1" reviewed by Angelo Leonardi

Brent Birckhead

Born:

Saxophonist Brent Birckhead is an award-winning artist, whose aesthetic is an intersectional amalgam of traditional and popular styles. Unbound by genre, Birckhead’s approach to woodwind artistry is driven by his compulsion for creative risk and deep respect for legacy. His place in the continuum of a storied lineage begins with his surname, Birckhead, and extends to his extensive musical education and work ethic as a visionary approach to life as a rising leader. Educated at Howard University (BME, MM), Birckhead was named best blues/pop/rock soloist and outstanding instrumental jazz soloist by Downbeat Magazine as part of the annual Student Music Awards
