Savoy Brown: Blues All Around

Read "Blues All Around" reviewed by Doug Collette

In keeping with this Savoy Brown album title, Blues All Around, Juan Junco's front cover photo looks like one of those rare painting that captures the essence of its subject. It is a ghostly apparition of an image, with the late guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Kim Simmonds shown wringing notes from a Gibson Flying-V, immersed in the emotion(s) of ...

Doug Collette's Best Releases Of 2020

Given the challenging year that was 2020, “Best of..." lists may turn out to be the high points of the last twelve months. Certainly there were times in the spring when it seemed as though a drought of new music might be inescapable, but as summer turned to fall, the titles kept rolling out, with the ...

Savoy Brown: Ain't Done Yet

Read "Ain't Done Yet" reviewed by Doug Collette

Kim Simmonds might not be quite as highly regarded in the contemporary blues milieu as “The Godfather of British Blues," John Mayall, but the former's forty-first album under the Savoy Brown monicker suggests he ought to be. As his profile has risen over the last five years, commensurate with his increased activity on the road and ...

Read "City Night" reviewed by Doug Collette

Savoy Brown's City Night is a declarative return to the blues after the group digressed into more rock-oriented territory on Witchy Feelin' (Ruf Records, 2017). As a result, this album under the aegis of founder and titular leader Kim Simmonds has more in common with The Devil to Pay (Ruf Records, 2015), an equally uncompromising tribute ...

Jim Worsley's Best Releases of 2017

Read "Jim Worsley's Best Releases of 2017" reviewed by Jim Worsley

As 2017 was another exceptional year in new music, choosing the recordings that rise above is a daunting task. It is also a lot of fun. Yes, such “drudgery" to listen to countless strong musical efforts from artists all over the world. The vast spectrum of seasoned pros, to new blood, and everything in between provided ...

Savoy Brown: Witchy Feelin'

Read "Witchy Feelin'" reviewed by Doug Collette

Even though the impact of the music isn't any less potent, the artist designation for Witchy Feelin' is notably different than that of the prior album by Kim Simmonds and Savoy Brown. In an act of combined humility and self-confidence on the part of the leader, the billing goes wholly to the band and that spirit ...
