Rodrigo Amado: Refraction Solo

by Mark Corroto
December 19, 2022

Are you familiar with Pablo Picasso's found art sculpture “Bull's Head"? It was created in 1942 from bicycle handlebars and a bike's saddle. Picasso was walking down the street and spotted the discarded items, and in a flash joined the two, creating an obvious depiction of a bull's head. That same spontaneous moment of creation informs ...

Rodrigo Amado Northern Liberties: We Are Electric

by John Sharpe
April 30, 2022

Portuguese saxophonist Rodrigo Amado hits the jackpot with the debut by his Northern Liberties quartet. He's found gifted collaborators in the Norwegian threesome of trumpeter Thomas Johansson, drummer Gard Nilssen and bassist Jon Rune Strøm. Amado's preferred domain is muscular free jazz. It's territory he's thoroughly explored with his Motion Trio, supplemented by guests like trumpeter ...

Rodrigo Amado Northern Liberties: We Are Electric

by Troy Dostert
January 9, 2022

By all accounts, 2021 was a very good year for Rodrigo Amado. One of the leading lights of the Portuguese avant-garde, the indefatigable tenor saxophonist first released The Field (NoBusiness), featuring his Motion Trio (with cellist Miguel Mira and drummer Gabriel Ferrandini) alongside guest pianist Alexander von Schlippenbach, and Let the Free Be Men (Trost), with ...

Friends & Neighbors: The Earth Is #

by Mark Corroto

The importance of choosing a name for your jazz band is often underestimated. Take the quintet Friends & Family for instance. When it was formed in 2008, it wasn't dubbed the André Roligheten Quintet or the Oscar Grönberg Band. No. From its beginnings, the quintet shared composing duties among its members as well as dutiful deference ...

Jonas Cambien Trio: Nature Hath Painted The Body

by John Sharpe
August 14, 2021

On its third outing, Norwegian-based Belgian pianist Jonas Cambien's Trio again sticks to the successful gambits which distinguished A Zoology of the Future (Clean Feed, 2016) and We Must Mustn't We (Clean Feed, 2018), but with enough novel switcheroos to keep things fresh. Joining the leader once more is reedman Andre Roligheten (also a member of ...

Friends & Neighbors: What's Next

by John Sharpe
July 29, 2019

With its fourth release, the Scandinavian quintet Friends & Neighbors, whose moniker references Ornette Coleman's album of near enough the same name, continues to find fertile soil in the American free jazz furrow. This time out the unchanged quintet of trumpeter Thomas Johansson, reedman André Roligheten, pianist Oscar Grönberg, bassist Jon Rune Strøm and percussionist Tollef ...

Friends & Neighbors: What’s Next?

by Alberto Bazzurro
February 13, 2019
