Jean Claude Jones

Born: 1949

Born in Tunisia in 1949 and raised in France, Jean Claude Jones emigrated to Israel in 1983 after studying at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. One of the pioneers of Jazz in Israel, he joined the Jazz Department of the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance in 1987, and later served as department chair from 1996 to 2000.

In 1988, JC switched from guitar to double bass and over the last 10 years he has shifted his attention from traditional jazz to free improvised music. His main focus is collaborating with a wide range of performing artists, including dancers, vocalists, and poets, with emphasis on small groups and intimate settings. After coordinating John Zorn’s Cobra project (an improvised music game) for the Israel Festival in 2003 he became musical director for Cobra's ongoing performances throughout Israel.

Jean Claude Jones has performed with many international artists including Slava Ganelin, Avishai Cohen, Dave Liebman, Dave Douglas, Frank London, Anthony Coleman, John Zorn, Arnie Lawrence , Joey Baron,the late Stan Getz and Ned Rothenberg among others.

His current direction includes expanded use of electronics and computer work alongside the bass.

JC is founder of the Kadima Collective, A US-based organization dedicated to Free Improvisation and creative music projects in Israel.
