Jaribu Shahid
Born:
Jaribu Shahid hails from Detroit, Michigan, and was raised in a diverse musical climate, playing with local luminaries such as Kenn Cox, Wendell Harrison, Jimmy Wilkins, J.C. Heard, Martha and the Vandellas and others. Principally self-taught, Jaribu’s training began in the band of friend Kamau kenyatta and in bass studies with Bob Collins. Around 1975 he was mentored by Faruq Z. Bey and joined the sci-fi band Griot Galaxy. This explorative music, greatly influenced by Sun Ra and the Art Ensemble of Chicago, featured the original concepts by Faruq Z. Bey. This was further realized in 1976 when Tanni Tabal moved to Detroit, establishing the principal rhythm section of his career
Teiku: Klang
by Glenn Astarita
Teiku is a Talmudic acronym that translates to unanswered question," a concept the Chicago-Detroit quartet has adopted as a full artistic identity. Co-leaders Josh Harlow (piano) and Jonathan Barahal (percussion) formed the band after discovering a striking coincidence: Both grew up singing Passover melodies unique to their ancestral Ashkenazi-Ukrainian villages. Passed down by ear through generations ...

The Art Ensemble of Chicago: We Are on the Edge: A 50th Anniversary Celebration
by Giuseppe Segala
Quanta storia.
The Art Ensemble of Chicago: We Are On The Edge: A 50th Anniversary Celebration
by Karl Ackermann
Bassist Malachi Favors, trumpeter Lester Bowie and saxophonist Joseph Jarman have all passed on, leaving the Art Ensemble of Chicago's remaining original members, saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell and drummer Famoudou Don Moye, to rebuild. We Are on the Edge is a double-CD package; it is a fifty-year celebration of the group, and a dedication to the departed ...
