His mother Velma (deceased) consistently kept him and his seven siblings in church while his father Floyd, was hard at work providing for his family. Henry Darragh

About Henry Darragh Henry Darragh is a talented multi-instrumentalist and composer currently working in Houston Texas while doing graduate studies at Moores School of Music. In addition to being a first-rate trombonist, Darragh can also play jazz piano, sing, compose, arrange, lead, educate, and inspire. To hear his debut CD Tell Her For Me one might think of him as an up and coming jazz songwriter who swings and croons vocals, but that would only be the latest chapter in his story. Born and raised in Pasadena Texas, Darragh was surrounded by music from a young age, and felt he might eventually become a classical trombonist

Helen Sung

Helen Sung is an acclaimed jazz pianist and composer, and a newly named 2021 Guggenheim Fellow. A native of Houston, Texas, and graduate of its High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA), she eschewed her classical piano upbringing after a jazz epiphany during undergraduate studies at UT Austin. Helen went on to become part of the inaugural class of the Thelonious Monk Institute (now the Herbie Hancock Institute) at the New England Conservatory of Music. Her recent releases Sung With Words (Stricker Street), a collaborative project with renowned poet Dana Gioia funded by a Chamber Music America New Jazz Works Grant, and Anthem For A New Day (Concord Jazz) topped the jazz charts

Kim Prevost

Kim Prevost is an accomplished vocalist and songwriter. She has worked in all facets of the entertainment industry. She began singing as a child,in church choirs,where she performed duets with the pastor,her father. In addition to completing formal dance training,she also worked extensively as a model for companies such as Saks Fifth Avenue. Throughout her college years,she continued pursuing a degree in theater and communications and she performed leading roles of productions such as Dream Girls,West Side Story and many more. Additional credits include 1999 B.E.T on Jazz discovery winner, several television commercials and a dancer for MTV show special “NFL Jams”

Frank McComb

FRANK McCOMB is a divine soul man who speaks with the native tongue of soul, jazz, blues and pop. His virtuoso vocal and piano work has made him not only an indispensable and highly sought after session musician, but a favorite on the soul, Jazz and R&B scenes. Frank Lacy

Ku-umba Frank Lacy is an American jazz trombonist

His father was a teacher who had played guitar with Illinois Jacquet, Eddie Cleanhead Vinson, and Arnett Cobb; his mother sang gospel music. He played piano from age eight, and played trumpet, euphonium, and tuba before settling on trombone at age 16.

He earned a bachelor's degree in physics[citation needed] before studying music at the Berklee College of Music,[citation needed] where he played with Branford Marsalis, Greg Osby, and Marvin Smith. Lacy then studied for his Masters degree at Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University

Arnett Cobb

Born: August 10, 1918

One of the classic Texas Tenors, there was always excitement elicited by Cobb’s uninhibited, blasting style which earned him the label "Wild Man of the Tenor Sax."

Arnette Cleophus Cobbs, was born on August 10, 1918, in Houston, Texas. He was taught piano by his grandmother and went on to study violin before taking up tenor saxophone in the Wheatley High School band. When he was fifteen he joined Louisiana band leader Frank Davis’s band and performed in the Houston area and throughout Louisiana during the summer. He worked with trumpeter Chester Boone for two years and left to become a founding member of the Milton Larkin Orchestra in 1936.

Ernestine Anderson

She was one of 75 women chosen for the book, I Dream a World: Portraits of Black Women Who Changed America, by Pulitzer Prize winning photographer Brian Lanker, joining such company as Rosa Parks, Leontyne Price, Barbara Jordan, and Toni Morrison.
