About Scott Fields

Scott Fields
Born:
Fields has produced music on and off since the 1960s, first in Chicago, then in other places scattered about North America, Europe, and Asia. Cologne is now his base, if perhaps not quite yet his home. Fields' musical education was haphazard, to say the least. In a case of the blind leading the blind, at first he taught himself guitar. Later he was introduced to music theory in ad hoc study groups, attended theory and compositions courses at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and tested the patience of a half-dozen or so private guitar teachers. As a composer he first wrote simple folk songs (this is age 12 stuff), then rock songs, then parodies of rock songs (these reflected his self-loathing of his insistence on continuing to perform as a rock guitarist just for the attention), then jazz head tunes, all of which led to his current mish-mash of material that, although he has scant interest in taxonomy, could be fairly called New Music or Avant-Jazz

Steve Khan
Born:
In a special issue of Japan's "JAZZ LIFE" magazine, they selected the 22 All-Time Greatest Jazz Guitarists. Of course, legends like Charlie Christian, Django Reinhardt, Wes Montgomery, Kenny Burrell, and Jim Hall were included alongside more recent giants George Benson, Pat Martino, Larry Coryell, and John McLaughlin. But right there amongst contemporaries John Abercrombie, Pat Metheny, John Scofield, Mike Stern and Bill Frisell was Steve Khan! Testament to a large body of work which now spans more than 30 years. Hard to believe this dream began at a rather late age with Wes Montgomery held as the model to which to aspire. Steve admits that, when he was a teenager, "I was a terrible drummer with no musical training. I had developed a love for the guitar, and when I was 19 I switched instruments. I decided that I would not make the same mistakes I had made with the drums and studied hard in college along with private lessons from Ron Anthony." During these years, Khan always found himself in fast company and, from such situations he learned, developed and survived. By the time he graduated from U.C.L.A., in 1969, he felt ready to make the move to New York City.

Victor Acker
Born:
They’re at it again!...I will resist the urge to sputter about not having been asked to write a commentary on the last Acker Bros. record If That, Then This…water over the bridge, guys. This latest offering by the brothers, who have been unfairly characterized as second-string ditty-smiths, is a foray into musical territory yet unknown (perhaps unknowable!) to their dry, high-brow, poll-reading critics. This music grooves, bops…as incandescent as a neon sign! And there could be no more fitting a title than Wigged Out! Take, for instance, the track “I Dream of Zeenies”…paging Doctor Freud! More than music, this record is punctuated with sonic exclamation points of a kind you might hear in some soulful sci-fi fantasy
