Sam Rivers Trio: Ricochet
by Glenn Astarita
Other than new product framed on forward-leaning jazz and improvisational artists, this record label annually resurrects gems from the vaults, evidenced on this adrenaline- fueled recording of the late great saxophonist Sam Rivers and his superstar trio. This follows the label's release of Zenith (No Business, 2019) which is Rivers' quintet caught live at a Berlin ...

Vance Provey - Bob Gorry - Paul Gunsberg: Collective Expression
by Glenn Astarita
It would seem appropriate that these Connecticut natives would strut their free-form stuff at the prominent Firehouse 12 studio and venue. Hence, the album moniker seeds the basis for the outing, where Vance Provey switch-hits between trumpet and drums while Paul Gunsberg does the same, performing on drums and saxophone. Ultimately, the trio's in-your-face posture tells ...

Recorded live at venues in Switzerland, the respective musicians comprising this quartet have made the rounds across Europe's fertile progressive jazz scene as leaders or valued sideman for numerous entities, largely focused on generating an outside-the-box schema in various shapes, forms and colors. Urs Leimgruber - Andreas Willers - Alvin Curran - Fabrizio Spera: Rome-Ing
by Glenn Astarita
These venerable European improvisers tease and taunt the listeners' psyches with free-form minimalist sound-shaping designs and subdued inner-workings with gradual buildups and asynchronous movements, countered by explosive episodes of angst, tinted with creaky sub-motifs. With four lengthy works recorded live in Rome--hence, the album titleAmerican pianist Alvin Curran and Swiss guitarist Andreas Willers incorporate electronics into ...
