Sam Rivers Trio: Ricochet

Read "Ricochet" reviewed by Glenn Astarita

Other than new product framed on forward-leaning jazz and improvisational artists, this record label annually resurrects gems from the vaults, evidenced on this adrenaline- fueled recording of the late great saxophonist Sam Rivers and his superstar trio. This follows the label's release of Zenith (No Business, 2019) which is Rivers' quintet caught live at a Berlin ...

Udo Pannekeet is the current bassist for the legendary Dutch progressive rock band Focus, featuring original members Thijs van Leer (flute, vocals, keyboards) and Pierre van der Linden (drums). Vance Provey - Bob Gorry - Paul Gunsberg: Collective Expression

Read "Collective Expression" reviewed by Glenn Astarita

It would seem appropriate that these Connecticut natives would strut their free-form stuff at the prominent Firehouse 12 studio and venue. Hence, the album moniker seeds the basis for the outing, where Vance Provey switch-hits between trumpet and drums while Paul Gunsberg does the same, performing on drums and saxophone. Ultimately, the trio's in-your-face posture tells ...

David Sancious: Eyes Wide Open

Read "Eyes Wide Open" reviewed by Glenn Astarita

After leaving Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band in 1974, keyboardist and guitarist David Sancious formed the band Tone, which was centered on jazz fusion, progressive rock, and melodic overtures. At the time, he became a highly respected artist, especially due to his drawling synth tones, fiery guitar work and penetrating rhythmic outbreaks. Moving forward, he performed ...

Mark Segger: Lift Off

Read "Lift Off" reviewed by Glenn Astarita

This Canadian band throws almost everything imaginable at the studio walls in synchronous fashion. And while the album may be classified as an EP, due to its 29-minute length, quality is the underlying factor throughout. Based out of Edmonton, Segger started this band via its first album, The Beginning (18th Note Records, 2011). Nine-years later, the ...

Read "Lotus Crash" reviewed by Glenn Astarita

Recorded live at venues in Switzerland, the respective musicians comprising this quartet have made the rounds across Europe's fertile progressive jazz scene as leaders or valued sideman for numerous entities, largely focused on generating an outside-the-box schema in various shapes, forms and colors. The band translucently shifts paradigms while bringing a signature mode of attack to ...

Miles Okazaki: The Sky Below

Read "The Sky Below" reviewed by Glenn Astarita

Electric guitarist Miles Okazaki—also using electronics—and his rhythm section comprise three-fifths of alto sax great Steve Coleman's current band, as keyboardist Matt Mitchell rounds out this quartet for the leader's second release for Pi Recrodings, but his fifth album overall. And while the album length is a little over 39-minutes, many artists are cutting back some ...

Urs Leimgruber - Andreas Willers - Alvin Curran - Fabrizio Spera: Rome-Ing

Read "Rome-Ing" reviewed by Glenn Astarita

These venerable European improvisers tease and taunt the listeners' psyches with free-form minimalist sound-shaping designs and subdued inner-workings with gradual buildups and asynchronous movements, countered by explosive episodes of angst, tinted with creaky sub-motifs. With four lengthy works recorded live in Rome--hence, the album title—American pianist Alvin Curran and Swiss guitarist Andreas Willers incorporate electronics into ...
