Jazz Returns to Seattle's Central District: Two Evenings of Black Brilliance

Read "Jazz Returns to Seattle's Central District: Two Evenings of Black Brilliance" reviewed by Paul Rauch

There is a miracle on the corner of 12th Avenue and Jackson St. in what is now Seattle's “Little Saigon." In what was a traditional African American and Jewish community before the influx of Vietnamese, Cambodian and Laotian immigrants after the war in Southeast Asia in the early 1980's, this urban crossroads was the main pulse ...

Jalen Baker: This is Me, This is Us

Read "This is Me, This is Us" reviewed by Troy Dostert

Joining the ranks of young vibraphonists with skills galore, Jalen Baker brings a lot to the table on his debut record, This is Me, This is Us. Ulysses Owens Jr. Big Band: Soul Conversations

Read "Soul Conversations" reviewed by Jack Bowers

Drummer Ulysses Owens Jr.'s Big Band comes out swinging on its debut recording, Soul Conversations, thundering through Michael Dease's incendiary arrangement of the Dizzy Gillespie/John Lewis flame-thrower, “Two Bass Hit." For more such heat, however, the listener must move forward to Track 5, John Coltrane's impulsive “Giant Steps," thence to Track 9 for Charles Turner III's ...

Giveton Gelin

Pursuing jazz is difficult when you lack an environment to develop in the Bahamas, but since the age of 10 Giveton Gelin has taught himself how to play the trumpet simply by emulating what he would hear on his favorite records. Despite years of self-tutelage it wasn't until he saw double bass player Adrian D'Aguilar playing live that Giveton realised "there was a place for jazz in the Bahamas!" Through this encounter led to Giveton taking part in music program abroad such as The Manhattan School of Music Summer Camp Jazz Band, Manhattan School of Music Summer Camp Latin Jazz Band and The Spike Wilner Trio
