Karlton E Hester

Born:

Karlton E. Hester, Ph.D. (composer/flutist/saxophonist), began his career as a composer and recording artist in Los Angeles where he worked as a studio musician and music educator. He received his Ph.D. in composition from the City University of New York Graduate Center and is currently Director of "Jazz" Studies at the University of California in Santa Cruz. As performer on both flute and saxophone, he is music director of the Fillmore Jazz Preservation Big Band and Hesterian Musicism. Hester is currently music director of Hesterian Musicism, founding director of the Fillmore Jazz Preservation Big Band in San Francisco and served as the Herbert Gussman Director of Jazz Studies at Cornell University from 1991-2001

Natsuki Sugiyama is a saxophone and woodwind player from Tokyo, Japan working in the United States and Japan. After graduating from high school, Natsuki attended the Berklee College of Music on scholarship. Since then, she has had the opportunity to perform at many prestigious events and venues in the US and Japan. Natsuki has been fortunate enough to study with George Garzone, Frank Tiberi, Hal Crook, Greg Hopkins, Darren Barrett and Dan Higgins. As a recording artist, Natsuki is very in-demand for her versatility on a wide variety of instruments. Some of her session work includes the musical comedy Lucky Stiff, in which she was a featured soloist on alto sax, flute, and clarinet

Mariane Bitran

French flutist, Mariane Bitran, released her fourth album "Wind Of Tomorrow ", in duo with Togolese guitarist Alain Apaloo on the Danish Jazz label, Alisio Music in december 2019. This album, recorded in Copenhagen, includes 9 original tracks and a african/meditative version of " What a Wonderful world ". Since her debut, Mariane Bitran has released two album as a leader, in Quintet form "A Place for You", "All One" and "Grey To Blue " in collaboration with Japanese pianist and composer, Makiko Hirabayashi, feat. American saxophonist, Bob Rockwell. All three albums were released for the Danish Jazz label, Stunt Records and well received both by the audience and the critics . The music is wide-spanning; inspired by different forms and rhythms and by her collaboration with musicians from the world-jazz-scene, as well as her roots in both classical and contemporary music. As soloist Mariane performed in festivals and toured in France, Germany, Denmark and Brazil, with musicians such as: Simon Spang-Hanssen, Pernille Bevort with Marcelo Nisinman, Chassol, Alain Apaloo's Api Pipo with Kurt Rosenwinkel, Zoomtop Orchestra with Richard Bona, Bojan Z, Nene Lima Filho, Olivier Cahours, Poul Reimann, Thomas Fonnesbech, Morten Lund, Anders Mogensen, Christophe Lavergne, only to name a few...

Marcio Resende

Marcio Resende was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on June 23, 1961. He began playing the flute at age seven and performed his first amateur musical show when he was sixteen with the band Semente that featured himself alongside Mario Adnet, Zé Luis Oliveira, and Claudio Nucci. His first professional show was with Nana Caymmi, the daughter of Dorival Caymmi. In 1981, Resende traveled to Boston, MA, to begin his musical studies at Berklee College of Music. He transferred to New England Conservatory one year later, studying with Jimmy Giuffre, George Russel, Joe Allard, Dr. William Thomas McKinley, John McNeil, Jack Reilly, and George Garzone, and graduating with a Bachelor of Music degree and Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies

Alexa Tarantino is an award-winning, vibrant, young jazz saxophonist, woodwind doubler, composer, and educator. Alexa’s “lovely, ardent way of improvising,” and “sharply plotted but gracefully unencumbered straight-ahead jazz [compositions]” (Giovanni Russonello, The New York Times) establish her individual voice which shines through as a dynamic performer and educator. Tarantino was recently named one of the “Top 5 Alto Saxophonists of 2019” by the JazzTimes Critics’ Poll. Her debut album, Winds of Change, peaked at #15 on the JazzWeek Charts and landed at #79 for JazzWeek’s Top 100 records of 2019. Tarantino’s performance highlights include prestigious venues such as Jazz in Marciac Festival (with Wynton Marsalis and the Young Stars of Jazz), Umbria Jazz Festival (with Ryan Truesdell’s Gil Evans Project), the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, the Hollywood Bowl (with Sherrie Maricle & the DIVA Jazz Orchestra), the Rockport Jazz Festival (Alexa Tarantino Quintet), Rose Theater at Jazz at Lincoln Center and the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts (with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra), and the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival (with LSAT, Earth, Wind & Fire and others)

Yulia Musayelyan is a flutist and composer born in Moscow, Russia, now based in the US. A versatile performer in classical and jazz idioms, she is the founder of the YM Quartet, Macayú Trio, Tango Meets Jazz project, and New Music Collective, dedicated to the performance of new original chamber music. Yulia has toured the US, UK, Europe, Central and South America with various musical projects. A recipient of the 2001 NFAA Award, she was a soloist with TACTUS Contemporary Ensemble in 2005 with guest conductor maestro Pierre Boulez. Hilary Noble

Born:

Hilary Noble is woodwind player, Afro-Latin percussionist, composer and music educator living in the Boston area. He has performed all over the U.S, Europe, and in Puerto Rico. His music has been played on radio stations internationally and featured prominently on local programs such as WGBH’s “Eric in the Evening”, on which he has performed live with his band Enclave. In 2008 Enclave received a grant from Chamber Music America to compose an Afro-Cuban jazz suite: the resulting work was premiered live on WGBH and at the Jazz Gallery in New York City. Artists Hilary Noble has played and recorded with include Bobby Sanabria’s Ascención, Esperanza Spalding, John Santos, Ray Vega, Chris Washburne, Charles Neville, Bo Diddley, Eric Krasno, Entrain, Max Creek, Bob Moses, Robin Kenyatta, Clifford Thornton, and Alvin Queen.

Sean Grace

Sean Grace's playing has been described as "eloquent, supple and evocative ... sometimes gentle, at all times sophisticated, and always exuberant". His warm, sensuous tone and breathless technique redefine the flute in contemporary jazz and instrumental pop. Born on Long Island, New York to Irish immigrant parents and the youngest of eight, Grace demonstrated a unique musical talent at a young age. By the age of 7, he was already accomplished on both the Irish tin whistle and baroque recorder and was composing songs on piano and organ. He got his first flute at age 8, performed at Carnegie Hall at 11 and entered the Juilliard School pre-college program on scholarship at 12
