Matías Formica
Born in the city of La Plata. Flutist, saxophonist, composer and arranger. He began his studies of transverse flute at the age of 14 (year 2000) with maestro Martín Saenz. He studied with Pablo Ledesma, Rodrigo Domínguez, Juan Pablo Di leone, Juan Pablo Arredondo, among others. In 2013 he attended the workshops of popular music in Curitiba (Brazil), participating in the MPB (Brazilian popular music) ensemble in charge of André Marques and the improvisation perception workshop in charge of Lea Freire. In 2019 he attended the SIM program in New York, and took classes with Tony Malaby, Tim Berne, Ralph Alessi among others. He participated in various projects, as instrumentalist arranger and composer, Matías Formica group, Mingus Project, El Domo, Quinteto Ledesma / Alarcón / Edward / Carracedo / Formica, José Perez Vargas Group (JPV), H.u.M.o, among several others.
His first recording work was “Compendio de ideas sobre deformaciones” with his group El Domo (own compositions) for Lumenan, the second was “AISLADOS” dúo with Jonatan Schenone (own compositions and improvisations) for Numeral, his third album was “Hastío y Paranoia” for Numeral, free improvisation album in trio formation with twelve different improvisers from different places. His latest album is “Destellos de un juguete inalcanzable” for Ears & Eyes records, Quintet album with his own compositions and free improvisations. He has recorded in other shared projects such as “No Comunica” for Ears & Eyes, with Lara Alarcón, Pablo Ledesma, Marcos Edward y Cristian Carracedo, 4.9 for Ears & Eyes, free improvisation disc with Matthew Golombisky y Rocío Giménez López, among others.
Among other activities, he co-directs with Lara Alarcón (singer, improviser and composer) the label Numeral. With this first release, he founded the new label dForma.
