Metropolitan Klezmer

Active since:
Metropolitan Klezmer, founded in 1994, is the collaborative adventure of seven exceptional New York-based musicians creating inspired interpretations and original compositions around a panorama of traditionally eclectic Yiddish repertoire. The band was formed by drummer/Yiddish film scholar EvevSicular with multi-talented world music artists Ismail Butera (accordion) and Michael Hess (violin, neyflutes, kanun zither) plus ubiquitous downtown bass and tuba treasure Dave Hofstra, and originallyvfeatured klezmer legend Howie Leess (b. 1920) on clarinet & tenor sax. Since their debut at John Zorn'sNew Jewish Music Fest, the group has expanded to include vocalist Melissa Fogarty and a dynamic hornsection: Debra Kreisberg (clarinet/alto sax), Pam Fleming (trumpet/fluegelhorn), and Reut Regev(trombone). Former members also include Steve Elson (reeds) and Rick Faulkner (trombone). Collectively, their experiences span genres from Albanian to Zydeco as well as jazz, Latin, classical, funk, ska and many other styles. Individually, Metropolitan Klezmer players have worked with suchdiverse artists as Bonnie Raitt, The Toasters, Bill Frisell, Toshi Reagon, Juan Carlos Formell, Indigo Girls,Burning Spear, Amy Sedaris, Max Roach, Rufus Wainwright, Nora York, and the Microscopic Septet, aswell as Jewish music performers from the Klezmatics and Andy Statman to David Krakauer, Sephardicstars Alhambra and SF's Charming Hostess. To quote Seth Rogovoy (The Essential Klezmer),Metropolitan Klezmer is "distinguished by just plain great, versatile ensemble playing... exuberant spiritand wit."

Isle of Klezbos

Active since:
Isle of Klezbos first emerged as an organic offshoot of New York's Metropolitan Klezmer. Formed in 1998, the frolicsome six-piece women's band soon became an acclaimed, dancing-in-the-aisles hit at a wide variety of venues from Vienna to Vancouver, and sold-out shows in 2024-25 including Joe's Pub NYC, City Winery (both NYC & Boston!), and Wellfleet Preservation Hall. A versatile, neo-traditional ensemble, the group plays imaginative versions of eclectic Eastern European-rooted Jewish folk music, Yiddish swing and tango, plus an ever-expanding repertoire of vibrant originals.
The band's latest album, "Yiddish Silver Screen," was released in December 2023 and immediately hit ASCAP's holiday playlists. Special projects have included backing Jill Sobule's "Music from Yentl" at Lincoln Center & beyond, and the band will be dedicating two upcoming shows to our beloved memories of Jill, featuring two of our favorite songs this very special but lesser-known original "Yentl" repertoire that we were so fortunate to perform with her.
Isle of Klezbos has enjoyed appearances on HBO's "Just Like That," Showtime's "The L Word" & CBS "Sunday Morning," as well as recording sessions for platinum Grammy-nominee Scissor Sisters. Recent live appearances highlights include sextet concerts at NYC's Museum of Jewish Heritage and Long Island's Heckscher Park Rainbow Stage, as well as featured appearances at MoMA/PS1 for Gregg Bordowitz's extravaganza three-show run.
