Samuel Rohrer: Continual Decentering

Read "Continual Decentering" reviewed by Henning Bolte

Berlin-based Swiss drummer Samuel Rohrer's solo album Continual Decentering is a follow-up to his quartet work Dark Star Safari (2019) with Jan Bang, Eivind Aarset and Erik Honoré and to his previous solo album Range of Regularity (2017), both released on his own Arjunamusic label. With drums, percussion, modular synthesizers and assorted electronics Rohrer created a ...

Eivind Aarset & Jan Bang: Snow Catches on her Eyelashes

Read "Snow Catches on her Eyelashes" reviewed by John Eyles

Although they had been collaborating since the early 90s, the first recording on which the Norwegian guitarist Eivind Aarset and American-born, Norway-resident Jan Bang appeared together was Bang's Pop Killer (Virgin, 1998). In the years since, Aarset and Bang have collaborated on many more albums, but this is the first to credit them as a duo. ...

2019: Striking A Balance In Review, Part 1

Read "2019: Striking A Balance In Review, Part 1" reviewed by Henning Bolte

Part 1 | Part 2 Every year the 'Best-of' game is underway again. But, “best of what?" is the immediate question. It's almost impossible for fishes of prey to hunt in a huge herring swarm, or for birds of prey to hunt in those huge budgerigar swarms. 'The best' is a choice from the ...

Punkt 2019

Read "Punkt 2019" reviewed by Henning Bolte

Sørlandet Art Museum, Kick Scene, Domkirken, Kilden Punkt Kristiansand, Norway September 5-7, 2019 Punkt, with its 15th anniversary, is a quite young member among this year's prominent jubilees. It is still in the thrilling and promising future that has taken its course from 2005 on. Punkt then brought studio-technology to the ...

John Kelman's Best Releases of 2017

Read "John Kelman's Best Releases of 2017" reviewed by John Kelman

For those who may have noticed, there have been no best of lists coming from yours truly since 2014; sadly, the chronic health problem that has reduced my previous writing pace to a crawl continues without much respite. My best of the year lists have always been predicated upon having reviewed the releases chosen, and with ...

PunktFestival 2017

Read "PunktFestival 2017" reviewed by Luca Vitali

Punkt Festival Kristiansand, Norvegia Varie sedi 31.8-2.9.2017 Come sempre Punkt è un festival fuori dall'ordinario e all'insegna dell'imprevisto e dell'imprevedibile. Una sorta di Industria 4.0 della musica: fuori dal “circolo" dei tour estivi, tipico dei festival jazz, e poco interessato a fotografare il passato e il presente, è invece molto attento ...

All About Jazz needs your support

Donate
All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, shelter in place and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary effort that will help musicians now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the bottom right video ad). Thank you.
