Rupert Gillett Trio

In a completely unique instrumental combination for a jazz-based trio, internationally renowned jazz Cellist Rupert Gillett is joined by Valerie Rathmann on double bass & vocals and Tim Schmiedner on drums.  The Rupert Gillett Trio produces a sound which is at times intricate and earthy and at times swinging and funky.

Rupert Gillett is a British cellist, bassist, composer and producer. He is an internationally respected jazz cello player and a specialist in many alternative cello techniques. Over the years, he has performed with numerous ensembles in a variety of genres, both on cello and double bass. He has played concerts and festivals all over the world as well as locations such as Buckingham Palace, the Orient Express and at the Paralympic Games. He has also performed many times on BBC Radio and television and worked extensively as a studio musician.

Joe Daniels

Born: March 9, 1908

Joe Daniels was a popular jazz drummer and British Dance Band leader. While initially working with bands such as that of Harry Roy's in the 1920s and 1930s, he quickly rose to fame internationally with his band Joe Daniels and His Hot Shots. They became known for their distinctive and zippy Dixieland-influenced renditions of swing hits from the period.

Jonah David

Born: October 30, 1977

Jonah David was born in South Orange, New Jersey on October 30, 1977. Both of his parents
had remarkable stories to pass down. His father began his career as an activist lawyer who worked with civil rights leader James Farmer in New Orleans; decades later, he won a landmark New Jersey Supreme Court case on behalf of thousands of shabbily treated tenement dwellers in the state.

David’s mother grew up in Harbin, a flourishing Jewish community in Japanese-occupied China where her Russian grandparents had traveled via the Trans-Siberian Railway to escape the pogroms. Her grandfather got rich operating a soap factory there, but lost everything after China retook its lost territories in the Sino-Japanese War and persecuted the Jews. Unable to get a visa to the United States, the family escaped to Israel, where they lived for a decade before finally making it to America.

Ever since Pablo started his journey as a musician in his teenage years, first as a student of modern music in Valencia and Barcelona, later in his life as a performer in England, Scotland and Germany, he has been interested in translating the stories of the world that surrounds him into music. His interest revolves not only around the rhythm, but also in the stories, the melodies, the harmonies, and the textures of the sounds.
