Mike Jurkovic's Best Releases Of 2020

Read "Mike Jurkovic's Best Releases Of 2020" reviewed by Mike Jurkovic

Here we are on the heels of Annus Horriblis still clinging to traditions both minuscule and grand like year end best of lists. So in the spirit of the season and survival, here's a 2020 playlist. Listen to these in this order or random play and perhaps the year in retrospect won't appear so damn bad. ...

Sun of Goldfinger: Congratulations to You

Read "Congratulations to You" reviewed by Mike Jurkovic

As if Tim Berne were a pied piper bearing the eleventh hour of democracy solely on his back, on the fourteen-minute opener “Bat Tears" (recorded in 2010) his rebel alto and now-retired baritone saxophones presciently pierce the abhorrent now under which we all labor, with a viscerally ecstatic, David Torn-Dopplered, sweeping, urgency which seizes the senses ...

Jonathan Suazo / Gabriel Vicens / Leonardo Osuna: No Base Trio

Read "No Base Trio" reviewed by Mike Jurkovic

There's an eery sumptuousness to the gravity-free, genre-less sound of No Base Trio that makes it incredibly difficult to get on with the day. The slant and tilt of modular sonic eruptions grab immediate attention. Its cascading, formless ambience affords strange new spaces to inhabit, explore, and contemplate during lockdown. Hailing from Puerto Rico, ...

In 2018 avant-garde guitarist David Torn fell in with some good company, the Swiss group Sonar, founded by guitarist Stephan Thelen. The result was Vortex (RareNoiseRecords), featuring Torn, who, in his words, contributed: “Textural events that can sometimes go on for minutes...and then the solo voice becomes almost like the cherry on top."
