Volkan Topakoğlu

Istanbulite bassist, composer and educator Volkan Topakoğlu made his debut with his album ‘Birdenbire’. Playing the keyboard and the guitar by ten, Volkan started his formal education in music studying cello and piano at Avni Akyol High School of Music and Arts in Istanbul. At fourteen he was influenced by his bass guitarist brother and started to listen to jazz records and play the bass guitar. He continued his education in music at Yıldız Technical University in Istanbul, studying electric bass and double bass with Kâmil Erdem. After graduation Volkan attended private lessons and workshops of bassists Jacek Meira-Niedziela, Bronislaw Suchanek, Drew Gress, Carlo DeRosa

Noted as a profoundly musical bassist with a keen melodic sense, Toronto-based composer, arranger and bassist Mike Downes has released award-winning recordings ranging from solo bass, trio and quartet to large ensemble. His recent projects include the release of his 8th album as a leader "The Way In," a commission to arrange 12 pieces for jazz quartet and and symphony orchestra to commemorate the centenary of the great Oscar Peterson in Osaka, Japan in June 2025, and shows worldwide throughout 2025. International Society of Bassists calls him "As gifted a composer as he is a bassist" and guitar great Pat Metheny calls Downes “one of my favorite bass players.”

Than a long and incredibly happy time I lived in the mountain, where opened another and best instrument, who always with you, voice. I learned to sing with a nightingales and other birds, copying, not always successfully, their trills in the garden. At the same time I really fall in love with the modern instrumental jazz. I was motivated to move away from of Euclidean geometry in the art to the direction of more completely and beautiful natural forms.

Meetings

At the moment the art projekt Meetings is happening in Malmö. The project aims to enable meetings between musical voices within a creative space based on improvisation. The idea was formed in the summer of 2017 by the musicians Jesse Emmoth and Kasper Lindberg as a reaction to the somewhat introvert sphere that improvised music often live inside. The goal was to create a musical context that is appealing and accessible for the general public and also appealing for the musicians that is invited to participate. In August “The Archipelago Suite” was performed with Josef Kallerdahl and Fredrik Davidsson as featured guest followed by “The Moody Comfort Suite” in November in which Johan Lundberg, Andreas Andersson and Mattias Hjorth participated

Tony Bray studied jazz improvisation and jazz pedagogy with renowned educator Jerry Coker at the University of Tennessee. Also with William Scarlett, Bennie Wallace and Warne Marsh at this time. Graduated with a Bachelor of Music in Studio Music and Jazz. After college he went on to teach theory and production classes as part of the Commercial Music program at the Antelope Valley College in California. He was also responsible for setting up the first “Small Jazz Group” program at Cal State Northridge. Al Muirhead

Al Muirhead Al Muirhead has long been an iconic gure on the Canadian jazz scene. And the trumpeter, composer, arranger, sideman and recording artist has been making listeners take notice for longer than jazz fans might realize. Born in Regina in 1935, he was playing in the Regina Symphony and dance bands by age 12. Muirhead began to take notice of greats such as Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, and Louis Armstrong. While Muirhead’s playing is infused with the indelible in uence of the jazz giants, his owing, melodic sound is his own — and has become in uential in its own right.
