Get The Blessing
Bassist Jim Barr once remarked that Get The Blessing were “total outsiders” and “the punk entry” when they won the 2008 BBC Jazz Award for Best Album with ‘All Is Yes’. Almost ten years later and five albums down the line, the same could still be said to hold true, albeit with a little more wisdom at their disposal. Formed in 1999 to share a fascination with the improvisation and monophonic nature of Ornette Coleman’s earlier works, the line-up has remained the same with Portishead rhythm masters Jim Barr and Clive Deamer on bass and drums respectively, Pete Judge on trumpet and Jake McMurchie on saxophone

Thelonius
Active since:
It was back in December 2011 that Thelonius first got together at Factory Studios in Bristol to rehearse. Back then it was Dan, Tim and Richard, fresh out of a bruising but rewarding experience with a UK hip-hop crew, who decided to revisit the music that was closest to their hearts. That music was dominated by J Dilla, The Roots, A Tribe Called Quest, D’Angelo’s Voodoo, Pete Rock and DJ Premier as well as the new kid on their block Robert Glasper and his team of wunderkinds, The Experiment. What was needed Gumtree was Tom with a penchant was a jazz piano player and the first one up on Mcmahon-Hore, a classically trained budding genius for EST and Thelonious Monk. The first rehearsal was one big laid back groove as Thelonius put T.R.O.Y

Nick is an original, exciting and heart-felt improviser. His rich, warm sound and sense of improvisational daring inform each and every musical situation and he plays with a total commitment to the music in the moment, whatever the stylistic context. Martin Pyne
Born:
While taking its name from a 15th century Burgundian composer, Busnoys is very much a 21st century jazz group. The band is fronted by vibraphone player Martin Pyne, a passionate and engaging improviser, who makes imaginative use of electronic processing to take his instrument into unexpected sonic territories. Pyne is a member of innovative improvising trio "Dangerous Kitchen" with saxophone legend Stan Sulzmann and percussionist Simon Allen, and is also has an ongoing collaboration with sax man Tony Woods and vocalist Nette Robinson. The trio's repertoire is based around Pyne’s striking compositions, which more often than not draw listeners in by telling some kind of a story, as well as the occasional judiciously chosen standard

Richard Lewis
Born:
An Englishman living in Paris, Richard Lewis trained as a classical percussionist before becoming a jazz drummer. After moving onto guitar, piano, accordion, banjo, hurdy gurdy and a host of other instruments, he spent time as a singer-songwriter on the folk circuit, before composing a number of scores for film, theatre and dance. Today, equally happy at centre-stage or as a side-man or session player, he returns to the piano to present his own jazz-fuelled songs, alongside flugelhorn player Jean-Baptiste Bridon (Courir Les Rues), saxist and flautist Jean-Hervé Michel and violinist Laurence Freund. His work sits somewhat insolently at the margins of jazz, ambient, folk and pop, without ever fully belonging to any of them.

Freight
A new jazz quartet from Bristol, England, playing original compositions drawing heavily from Thelonious Monk inspiration, and the fiery post-modern aptitude of John Coltrane. Pianist Martin Jenkins, the composer of Freight's original material, is teamed up with the heavy tenor and soprano sax playing of Craig Crofton, the dynamic drumming of Richard Laws, and the rhythmical assured upright-bass playing of Greg Cordez. They have just launched their newly completed album.
