10 Videos of Bossa Nova Trios

10 Videos of Bossa Nova Trios

I was in Rio de Janeiro yesterday. Not the real Rio but the Rio of YouTube and my imagination. With temperatures still frigid in New York, my mind drifted off to South America and the many great bossa trios that have emerged from Brazil over the years. Here are 10 clips of trios, seven of which ...

Birth of American Bossa Nova

Birth of American Bossa Nova

One of America's first champions of Brazilian bossa nova was Felix Grant. A jazz disc jockey in Washington D.C., Grant hosted The Album Sound on WMAL. Sergio Pereira

Born:

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, I started playing acoustic guitar (violao) at the age of 8 years old, influenced by my older brother who played the guitar and helped me with my first chords. I have also been influenced by the music of bossa- nova giants at the time such as Joao Gilberto, Tom Jobim, Carlos Lyra, Joao Donato, Marcus Valle and many more. Growing up in Rio in the 60’s and 70’s has contributed tremendously to the energy, groove and rhythms reflected in my music today.

Moving to New York in the 80’s has motivated me to, not only continuing playing the guitar, but to further enhance my knowledge of music and the guitar itself, hence I started to study with some of the jazz greats including Chuck Wayne, Sal Salvador, Alex Adrian, Hui Cox and Joe Carter. Since the beginning of the 90’s I have been travelling the world, playing with different bands and at various venues in many different countries in Europe, Africa and elsewhere.

Vienna’s „first couple of Jazz“ - Michaela and her ingenious partner, composer and incredible fluid guitarist Robert Pawlik present a diversified and sophisticated musical experience extraordinaire, with their signature sound of Jazz spiced up with a touch of world.

The tunes root on the one hand in the melodic stiles of the Jazz tradition, like Hardbop, Swing, Modern Jazz, New Orleans Second Line and Blues, and, on the other hand, form fusions with elements of Indian, African or Latin American music.

Diane Nalini

Born:

Diane Nalini’s new album, 'Kiss Me Like That,' is a collection of 13 songs celebrating humanity's fascination with the sky. From the title track's infectious rhythms, to ‘Cuando sale la luna’ - Diane’s sultry ode to the moon, her original compositions on this album are all influenced by the wonders of the sky and stars. Her six original songs are perfectly complemented by classic jazz standards chosen carefully for this project, like "Stardust", "Skylark", "They All Laughed", as well as her intimate interpretations of folk & pop songs such as James Taylor's "Sweet Baby James" and Sting's "Valparaiso." Songs from Kiss Me Like That have already attracted considerable interest in the media, being previewed nationally on CBC Radio's "The Sunday Edition", "Fresh Air", "As It Happens", "Metro Morning" and CBC Radio Two's documentary programme, "Inside the music." It has also garnered praise and airplay on Radio-Canada's "Espace Musique." Maclean’s Magazine, Canada's national news magazine, also did a full-page article on her recently. Singer/songwriter Diane Nalini's previous album put a uniquely modern spin on the words of William Shakespeare

Vic Lewis Plays Bossa Nova

Vic Lewis Plays Bossa Nova

One of my favorite little-known bossa nova albums was recorded by a British big-band leader born in 1919. Inconceivable, but true. Vic Lewis Plays Bossa Nova at Home and Away was recorded in Los Angeles in January 1963 and in London for EMI in February as an RCA-EMI joint venture. The L.A. tracks were done with ...
