Bob Magnusson

As the heart of the rhythm section, the bass is the center of any jazz ensemble and, in ways, the most important of the jazz instruments. It is, therefore, something of an irony that jazz bassists are known not so much for their own performances as for the horn players and pianists with whom they share the spotlight. With this measure in mind, Bob Magnusson must be counted as one of today's most successful jazz bassists. He has performed with the likes of Art Pepper, Slide Hampton, and some of the other greatest names in jazz. In addition, he has performed occasionally with such pop stars as Natalie Cole, Neil Diamond, and Linda Ronstadt

Art Pepper: Unreleased Art Pepper Vol. 10: Toronto

Laurie Pepper, widow of alto saxophonist Art Pepper, achieved a life milestone in her brilliantly liberating sequel to Straight Life--The Story Of Art Pepper By Art And Laurie Pepper (Da Capo Press, 1983), where she rhetorically asked: If Art hadn't had me there constantly assessing his mood, taking his aesthetic temperature, would he then ...

L'ultimo hipster.

The Girshevich Trio: Algorithmic Society

While nearly all of the buzz in the music press about the Girshevich Trio has been about the young age of drummer Aleks Girshevich--who was roughly 12 when this album was recorded, the second of his young life--sooner or later his career will be judged solely by his playing. That's the thing about prodigies--they grow out ...
Art Pepper: Neon Art: Volume 3

This concludes the Neon Art series, whose life began as three vinyl LP releases in 2012. Wisely, Pepper's widow, Laurie Pepper and co-producer Cheryl Pawelski decided to re-issue these performances on CD. Neon Art, Volume 1 and Neon Art, Volume 2 preceded Volume 3 in as many months. The Neon Art performances are ...

Ms. Pepper has done a couple of things different ...
Peter Sprague String Consort: Dr. Einstein's Spin

Composer/guitarist Peter Sprague isn't well-known, but there are few musicians operating at his level; he counts pianist Chick Corea, bassist Charlie Haden and fellow six-stringer Pat Metheny among his enthusiastic supporters. One of his ongoing projects, The Peter Sprague String Consort, represents a true marriage of jazz trio with string quartet, and the ensemble is ...
Bill Mays: Inventions, Conventions and Dimensions

This title is more than a rhyme: it's an attempt to capture some of the legendary versatility of pianist Bill Mays. Inventions" refers to his unprecedented, working jazz trio of piano, trumpet, and cello. Conventions" is a nod to his invaluable contribution to the annual meeting of the International Society of Bassists (in 2013, he played ...
