Dom Minasi: Eight Hands One Mind

Read "Eight Hands One Mind" reviewed by Hrayr Attarian

Restlessly innovative, guitarist Dom Minasi is a stalwart of the creative music scene. A brilliant improviser and composer, Minasi deftly utilizes his inventive ideas as launching points for his equally exciting extemporizations. On the unique Eight Hands One Mind, Minasi joins three other intrepid guitarists for a fiery and poignant tribute to another trailblazer, the late ...

Poetry and Jazz: A Chronology

Read "Poetry and Jazz: A Chronology" reviewed by Duncan Heining

My intention here is to offer a detailed but inevitably incomplete chronology of poetry and jazz. The focus is solely on the combination of the two art forms in performance, not on poetry about jazz or jazz musicians or poetry inspired by jazz but not performed to music. My definition of 'poetry' is fairly broad and ...

Dave Cappello & Jeff Albert with William Parker: New Normal

Read "New Normal" reviewed by Mark Corroto

If sentimentality is the synonym of nostalgia, then the antonym is anticipation, and maybe a better word would be modernity. That word comes to mind spinning the trio recording New Normal by trombonist Jeff Albert, drummer Dave Cappello and their guest, bassist William Parker. Sentimentality is often associated with New Orleans, the birthplace of ...

Matt Lavelle, John Pietaro: Harmolodic Monk

Read "Harmolodic Monk" reviewed by Alberto Bazzurro

Matt Lavelle and John Pietaro: Harmolodic Monk

Read "Harmolodic Monk" reviewed by Florence Wetzel

In multi-instrumentalist Matt Lavelle's insightful blog, “That Fat Eb Feels Mahogany to Me," he discusses a challenge shared by many jazz musicians: “With people doing more and more repertoire projects to get work and for sheer love of that artist, I have been thinking about ways to explore the relationships between the kings without doing a ...

L.A. Jenkins / Hasan Abdur-Razzaq / Adam Smith: Intrusion

Read "Intrusion" reviewed by Mark Corroto

This outwardly simple and uncomplicated trio recording by L.A. Jenkins matches three improvisers with almost identical musical visions. The guitarist collaborates with saxophonist Hasan Abdur-Razzaq and drummer Adam Smith. Both partners are versed in the exploratory music of Sun Ra, Albert Ayler, and Pharoah Sanders. And both are members of The Wizards, a quartet that mines ...

All About Jazz needs your support

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded albums and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, limited reopenings and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary step that will help musicians and venues now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the sticky footer ad). Thank you!
