Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber

Founded by Vil­lage Voice icon Greg Tate and co-led with mon­ster bassist Jared Michael Nick­er­son since 1999, Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Cham­ber is a sprawl­ing band of musi­cians whose prodi­gious per­son­nel allows them to freely jug­gle a wide swath of the exper­i­men­tal soul-jazz-hip hop spectrum. Burnt Sugar was orig­i­nally con­ceived as a forum for the New York area impro­vi­sa­tional musi­cian to com­pose, record and per­form mate­r­ial which reflects the breadth and depth of Amer­i­can dias­paran music in the 21st cen­tury. The intent of the Arkestra Cham­ber, through the deploy­ment of Butch Morris’s con­duc­tion sys­tem, is to make every per­for­mance a fresh inter­pre­ta­tion of its con­stituent parts. Rather than limit our­selves to the straight jack­ets that the com­mer­cial record­ing indus­try uses to mar­ket con­tem­po­rary Black Music, Burnt Sugar freely moves amongst many styles, eras and gen­res to devise its own excit­ing hybrids

SIU2, a locally bred band, presents you a novel experience of Hong Kong music with their original and unique style. Their works challenge people’s inherent concept about Chinese music and create a new genre fusing modern and traditional, Chinese and western elements. But don’t attempt to label the band as merely another crossover of rock, classical, Chinese and western music. It’s something different.

Indigo Jam Unit

Formed in Osaka, Japan, in 2005 indigo jam unit consists of Yoshichika Tarue (piano), Katsuhiko Sasai (double bass) Isao Wasano (percussion & drums), and Takehiro Shimizu (drums). Indigo jam unit's full length releases as of April 2011 includes six full length CD albums, starting with "DEMONSTRATION" in 2006, all selling more than 10,000 copies each in Japan. Other releases include the 2009 "Vintage Black" collaboration with label mates Flexlife, and from the same year, "re:common from indigo jam unit", the band's remixes of some of hip hop star Common's songs behind his original voice tracks and cover album, "ROSE", featuring vocalist Alicia Saldenha released on Sep 2, 2011. indigo jam unit's unique sound truly rests on the combination of the four members

HAZMAT MODINE plays the kind of Blues one might have found in a barrelhouse in New Orleans had the city been inhabited by gypsies who performed with Otis Redding and the city had been built on the Black Sea. The band is driven by harmonicas, tuba, drums, guitars, Banjo and a full horn section. Guests play such exotic instruments as the Romanian cimbalom, the banjitar, and the Claviola. Front man Wade Schuman has the appropriately throaty voice of someone who has both hopped freight trains and collaborated with the Throat Singers of Tuva. For the past eight years, the band has been touring in over 40 countries worldwide

Orquestra Jazz de Matosinhos

Orquestra Jazz de Matosinhos is a non-profit institution that promotes creation, research, spread and training in the jazz field. Created in 1997, it has the support of the Municipality of Matosinhos since 1999 and it crosses international ambition with a sense of local responsibility. Continuously invests in the development of diversified artistic projects, coherent educational projects and in the recording of Portuguese jazz. A pioneer in a largely unexplored territory, OJM plays the role of the National Jazz Orchestra.

On October 5th, 2017, while celebrating its 20th anniversary, OJM was invited to participate in the commemorations of the 107th anniversary of the Proclamation of the Portuguese Republic, at the São Bento Palace in Lisbon. The Portuguese Prime-Minister and the Portuguese Culture Minister honoured the orchestra with the Medal for Cultural Merit.

The uniqueness of OJM is revealed in the versatility that allows it to play the role of a national jazz orchestra while performing repertoires of all aesthetic variants and ages of jazz. It has the artistic direction of Pedro Guedes and was co-directed with Carlos Azevedo until 2021. Collaborated with Maria Schneider, Carla Bley, Lee Konitz, John Hollenbeck, Jim McNeely, Kurt Rosenwinkel, João Paulo Esteves da Silva, Carlos Bica, Ingrid Jensen, Bob Berg, Conrad Herwig, Mark Turner, Rich Perry, Steve Swallow, Gary Valente, Dieter Glawischnig, Stephan Ashbury, Chris Cheek, Ohad Talmor, Joshua Redman, Andy Sheppard, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Fred Hersch, Rebecca Martin, Peter Evans, Fay Claassen, Kiko Freitas, Maria Rita, Maria João, Mayra Andrade, Manuela Azevedo, Sérgio Godinho, Manel Cruz, Mário Laginha and Rui Reininho. It has also shared the stage with Remix Ensemble, Casa da Música/Porto Symphony Orchestra and Matosinhos String Quartet. Every year since 2007, OJM performs two new projects with special guests at Casa da Música. 

In 2014, it started the series “New Jazz Talents”, where OJM invites young musicians to play as soloists in front of the Big Band. In 2019, in its 11th edition, a young Spanish musician was invited for the first time, extending the project to the entire Iberian Peninsula from then on.

Carlitos Medrano and The Viñales Project

Carlitos Medrano born in Havana, Cuba, began his musical studies by teaching himself to play Bongos and Congas using traditional Cuban music and Rumba as his guide. After a few years of studying, experience, and having participated in folkloric musical projects and timba, also known as Cuban Salsa, he decided to broaden his musical knowledge by beginning a course of musical studies in the Escuela de Superacion Profesional de Arte “Felix Varela y Morales” where he began to create his foundation for Latin Jazz fusion within other musical projects in Cuba. He remembers with great satisfaction and happiness having been a student of famous international Cuban percussionists such as Jose Antonio Oviedo, Ignacio Jarabe Martinez, Eliel Lazo Linares, Yaroldy Abreu, José Luis Quintana, also known as Changuito

Tango en Tres

Contemporary ‘tango music’ trio. Formed in late 2006, Tango en Tres introduces their repertoire, consisting in original work as well as in pieces by avant-garde composers such as Eduardo Rovira y Horacio Salgan. Trough the band’s musical and instrumental arrangements, Tango en Tres creates a new aesthetic with a contemporary, personal style, using the gender’s roots as the starting point but always aiming for a XXI century sound. Without losing it’s essence, Tango en Tres accomplishes a fresh sound, full of shades and dynamics; with an harmonic vocabulary that goes from tonality to post tonality, a confident control of irregular rhythm and the use of jazz improvisation, they secure a product that stands for it originality in the gender. Tango en Tres, is setting the course and it has become a reference in the definition of ¨new tango¨

Space Genetics

Space Genetics was formed in 2008 by Eric Haltmeier and Paul Scea. The concept behind Space Genetics centers on creating original compositions and platforms for improvisation that can be developed independently of time and space via the use of digital technology. The music of Space Genetics is realized through the Internet- based sharing of musical fragments, loops, cells, and/or structural material. Recorded samples are shared online and are then complemented and/or manipulated via digital technology in order to create new musical structures. In the case of Space Genetics, both woodwind instruments, electronic instruments, sampled sounds, and controllers are used to create the "source" material.
