Mike Kaplan

Born: May 10, 1957

Mike Kaplan (arranger/tenor saxophone) envisioned the Nonet as a unit combining the strength, cohesion and varied tonal colors of a big band with the spontaneity and flexibility of a small group.  Among the groups and performers Kaplan has played or recorded with are Slide Hampton, the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Chico Mendoza’s Latin Jazz Dream Band, Steve Turre, Russell Malone and Rob McConnell.  

In addition to freelancing in the NJ/NY area, Kaplan has had his arrangements performed by the Diane Moser’s Composers Big Band and recorded by Orquesta Royal and la Progressiva.  

Mike Conrad

Born: May 15, 1988

Mike Conrad is a composer, improviser, and teacher from Iowa. He has been recognized for his arranging and composing with four ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Awards and seven DownBeat Awards, as well as awards and commissions from the Contemporary Music Academy in Beijing, the Bundesjazzorchester of Germany, the West Point Army Jazz Knights, and many other organizations. Conrad’s music has been performed all over the world, including a 2017 concert by the Metropole Orkest in the Netherlands, a 2014 Carnegie Hall Premiere, and a performance at the US Presidential Inauguration in 2013. As a performer, he has toured China, played at the Umbria Jazz Festival in Perugia, Italy, and appeared at various jazz festivals and venues all over the United States

Timothy Lee Miller

Born: October 10, 1961

TIMOTHY LEE MILLER is an American composer, arranger, orchestrator, and publisher of contemporary concert music for chamber ensembles, orchestra, wind ensemble, and voice, as well as jazz music for big bands and small combos. He has also written for several small film and television projects. He has earned degrees from the University of Tennessee (BS Music Ed, 1984), the University of Miami (MM Media Writing and Production, 1990) and Vermont College of Fine Arts (MFA Composition, 2013). His principal composition teachers have been John Anthony Lennon, James Progris, Tamar Diesendruck, Jonathan Bailey Holland, Andy Jaffe, John Fitz Rogers, and Roger Zahab. He has received numerous commissions and awards, including several ASCAP awards. His works have been performed throughout the US, Europe, Russia, and China. His music is recorded on ERMMedia, Ansonica, Navona, and Phoenix Classics.

Ada Rovatti

Born: July 25, 1976

Italian native Ada Rovatti started playing saxophone in high school after years of classical piano training.

After winning a scholarship from Berklee College of Music in Italy she divided herself between Boston where she studied with Joe Viola, George Garzone and Fred Lipsius and Italy where she was regular working in Big Band with guest artists such as:  Phil Woods, Lee Konitz and many more.

 After spending one year in Paris touring Europe and Africa she moved in New York City. She has performed in important festivals  such as JVC in NYC Rochester Jazz Festival, IAJE, Detroit Jazz Fest, Montreal Jazz Fest, San Francisco Jazz Fest, NorthSea Jazz Fest and a regular on the JazzCruise, appearing  and performing with an impressive and diverse list of artists and bands such as: Mike Stern, John McLaughlin,  Anne Ducros, Bob Mintzer, Victor Bailey, Joanne Brackeen, Tony Levin, John McLaughlin , James Moody, Aretha Franklin, Herbie Hancock, Jimmy Heath, Patti Austin, Joe Bonamassa and many others.
