Heinz Sauer with Michael Wollny & Joachim Kühn: IF (BLUE) THEN (BLUE)
by AAJ Italy Staff
Dan Berglund's Tonbruket: Dan Berglund's Tonbruket
by John Kelman
After 15 years as the bassist for Swedish supergroup e.s.t.--and, at least to the public eye, to the exclusion of all else--the big question about Dan Berglund was, after the group tragically dissolved following the untimely death of pianist Esbjörn Svensson, what next? Froy Aagre: Cycle of Silence
by John Kelman
For her first album on the internationally distributed ACT label, saxophonist Frøy Aagre continues along the path begun with her earlier releases on the Norwegian AIM label--Katalyze (2004) and Countryside (2006)--mining her own combination of melancholic Nordicism, Baroque classicism and American jazz tradition. As on Countryside, she expands her core piano/bass/drums quartet on six tracks, enhancing ...
Dan Berglund's Tonbruket: Dan Berglund's Tonbruket
by Chris May
Since the death of pianist Esbjörn Svensson in summer 2008, a few months before the release of e.s.t.'s Leucocyte (ACT Music, 2008)--an album which seemed to promise a second revolutionary stage in the Swedish group's music--fans have been obliged to look elsewhere for rock-infused reorientations of the piano trio tradition. There have been plenty of places ...
Thierry Lang: Lyoba Revisted
by John Kelman
New sources of inspiration can sometimes be no farther away than your own backyard. Coming from Fribourg--a small, beautifully preserved old town in the west of Switzerland--the classically trained and jazz-savvy pianist Thierry Lang has long been drawn to area's endemic music, in particular that of Joseph Bovet, a priest who lived in the area from ...
