Keptorchestra meets Steve Lacy: Sweet Sixteen

Ricompare uno storico album del 1994 (incisione del febbraio '93) in cui Steve Lacy, prossimo ai sessanta, si accompagnava alla veneta Keptorchestra. In aggiunta ai nove brani originari, figura oggi, giusto in apertura di CD, l'unica composizione esterna al consesso (ma certo non estranea a Lacy), la monkiana "Straight No Chaser." E fra coloro che nel frattempo se ne sono andati, decisamente anzitempo, oltre al grande sopranista ci sono anche Maurizio Caldura e, più di recente, Marco Tamburini, entrambi scomparsi in circostanze particolarmente tragiche.

A loro e a Lacy, immaginiamo che la riproposta di un'incisione che ebbe del resto già a suo tempo vasta eco sia implicitamente dedicata. Vi trovano posto, alternati con quasi assoluta regolarità, quattro temi lacyani fra i più nobili e cinque dei keptorchestrali (nell'ordine Caldura, Tamburini, i due Tonolo, Marcello e Pietro, e Rossi, rispettivamente nei brani secondo, quarto, sesto, settimo e nono), col Monk d'avvio idealmente a sua volta quinto tema annettibile al songbook del sopranista.

Il quale è udibile unicamente nelle pagine con la sua firma in calce (più, ovviamente, il succitato Monk), che non solo per questo sono largamente le migliori del CD, costruite attorno a idee forti e riconoscibili come Lacy sempre sapeva fare nei temi di suo pugno, laddove la scrittura dei suddetti keptorchestrali si mantiene entro ambiti più squisitamente da big band, con l'impatto che ne consegue. Il migliore appare "Finlandia" di Marcello Tonolo, quello in cui più nitido si coglie l'impianto (e lo sforzo) compositivo che lo sottende.

Ristampa a tutti gli effetti benedetta.
