The Bad Plus: Suspicious Activity?
Jazz o non jazz, i Bad Plus sono un trio che suona il jazz come se suonasse il rock. Un bassista che spara bordate come se stesse al fronte, un batterista che spacca in due il ritmo, un pianista virtuoso ed elegante che cita prima Satie e l'avanguardia per poi mettere tutto in discussione con un cluster terrificante: questi sono i tre terribili ragazzi americani che si divertono a fare spionaggio creativo tra i generi.

Se poi si aggiungesse che a produrli hanno chiamato un tal Tchad Blake (già alla corte di Peter Gabriel, Pearl Jam, Suzanne Vega, Los Lobos, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello e Phish) il dossier di questa "attività segreta" è ancora meglio svelato.

Tre dischi finora prodotti di interessanti commistioni e reinterpretazioni (dai Nirvana, passando per i Blondie fino a Aphex Twin, non escludendo la recente cover di "Karma Police" dei Radiohead contenuta nel tributo Exit Music, Songs with Radio Heads) hanno imposto all'attenzione l'attività di costante e caparbia decostruzione e/o abbattimento dei confini tra i generi.

Suspicious Activity? li pone in una luce ancora meno definita, refrattaria alle etichette di comodo, ma non per questo meno interessante. Nove tracce originali più una reinterpretazione di "Chariots of Fire" (per molti aspetti non casuale, viste le timbriche utilizzate nel CD), presentano il terzetto come una meravigliosa macchina da guerra pronta ad affossare le aspettative e i luoghi comuni.

Parossismi timbrici e dissonanti ("Prehensile Dream", "The Empire Strikes Backwards"), architetture complesse ("Let Our Garden Grow"), richiami della tradizione post bop ("Knows the Difference" e "O.G. Original Gentlemen", dedicata a Elvin Jones) si fondano su un piglio da rock band che non sembra avere eguali nello scenario musicale attuale. E poi spunta pure un po' di romanticismo ("Lost of Love").
