Ernie Krivda Quintet: Stellar Sax

Fra i tenor-sassofonisti che operano nel mainstream contemporaneo i punti di riferimento sono da lungo tempo John Coltrane e Sonny Rollins. Sono quindi i benvenuti personaggi che hanno scelto altre coordinate come Mark Turner ed il meno noto Ernie Krivda, un sassofonista di Cleveland che ogni tanto va a New York a farsi ascoltare da un pubblico esigente ed incidere con il produttore Bob Rush. Krivda scelto di suonare alla Stan Getz e di darsi alla composizione di bei temi accattivanti, eseguiti da una band che ha insieme da diversi anni.

Fanno subito presa, hanno una cifra personale, insomma fanno del jazz che con le radici nel bop si distanzia, e di tanto, da quello che, in questo genere ci è dato ascoltare di solito. È chiaro che provando e riprovando sempre lo stesso programma sera per sera nei club, come faceva decenni fa il quintetto di Miles Davis con John Coltrane, alla fine certi meccanismi diventino automatici e si sia in grado di sviscerare a memoria quello che c'è dentro i brani eseguiti, andando in studio in una situazione ormai divenuta inconsueta: quella della registrazione live senza accorgimenti tecnici a posteriori.

I lunghi assoli dei partecipanti al progetto non annoiano per niente: si tratta di brani che durano piu' di un quarto d'ora ciascuno, eppure reggono benissimo, grazie alla fantasia illimitata di musicisti preparatissimi che agiscono come un'unità senza lasciare mai cadere la tensione nel corso delle esecuzioni. Il giovane trombettista Dominick Farinacci merita una citazione a parte, chissà, forse uscirà dalla sua Cleveland per farsi conoscere in giro per il mondo.

Fra i brani - tutti di ottimo livello - spicca per la dedica, "Alcara Li Fusi", comune della provincia di Messina e paese d'origine dei nonni di Krivda, reso in un singolare quadro musicale in 6/8. Chissà, dovesse ripassare per il bel paese dei suoi avi, che non trovi il tempo per farsi ascoltare in qualche festival! Il finale "Starlight Musing" è eseguito in solo sulla struttura armonica di "Stella By Starlight", pieno di forza melodica è una conferma di come Krivda sia aperto a soluzioni non convenzionali per un bopper risultando comunque convincente.
