Rob Mazurek: Sound Is
In effetti, il cornettista quarantaquattrenne riunisce in queste quattordici tracce uno sviluppo di suoni ipnotici che si susseguono nella consequenzialità sposata alla libertà espressiva di Bill Dixon e Sun Ra e all'uso essenziale dell'elettronica.
Nella cosmogonia di Mazurek non sono certo secondari neanche la consistenza della tromba e un peculiare senso della frase. Il che risutlta quasi paradossale a dirsi di un disco costruito su frammenti armonici o armonie reiterate e sull'approfondimento del suono e del timbro più che sui temi. Un percorso innalzato in verticale dall'affascinante incontro tra Mazurek e vibrafono (che ha un suo momento esclusivo con "Microraptagonafly" dove Adasiewicz suona con l'archetto) e lungo il quale riecheggiano di volta in volta la Exploding Star Orchestra, i Sao Paulo Underground, il Davis più notturno, una dimensione post-modale e, nell'incontro tra bassi e vibrafono, il post-rock dei Tortoise (molto evidente nei passaggi e nelle modulazioni "The Dream Rocker").
Anche nei momenti in cui l'improvvisazione vola alta la musica si staglia sempre su una geografia armonica minimale, conchiusa assieme a una ritmica inesorabile che si esplicita ora sfrangiata, sporca e aperta, ora corposa e concreta e che può diventare ossessiva e persino psichedelica, attraverso un andamento immobile e dinamico allo stesso tempo.
Notevole.
