Native Soul: Soul Step

C'è molto spesso il sax di Peter Brainin al centro degli sviluppi tematici degli undici brani che compongono la tracklist di Soul Step, il lavoro in studio firmato dal quartetto Native Soul. Tracce che si riferiscono a una seduta di registrazione del 2008, in quel di Dover, nelle quali possiamo apprezzare una buona serie di originali - e un paio di rivisitazioni - dove ognuno dei protagonisti è riuscito a mantenere una certa coerenza sia di scrittura che di esecuzione.

Il sax, dicevamo. Ma va sottolineata anche l'imprescindibile duttilità pianistica di Noah Haidu, che tra pianoforte e tastiere riesce a mutare l'atmosfera dei brani, dalle classiche movenze di un certo jazz tradizionale - che si muove, per capirci, nei paraggi del piano trio - a situzioni leggermente più cool, nel senso più ampio del termine. La band predilige i tempi di esecuzione veloci, vedi il caso di "Slipstream," nei quali le peculiarità tecniche vengono a galla in maniera preponderante, mentre nei momenti più cadenzati, come nella scurissima "Mingus," è l'alto grado di comunicabilità a far guadagnare all'album mezza stella in più in pagella.

Brainin si fa notare per la sua sensibilità melodica anche al flauto, come in "Into the Night," mentre è la rivistazione dell'hendrixiana "Castles Made of Sand" il momento di maggior impatto a livello di capacità d'insieme.
