Dodici più o meno celebrati standard, raccolti in un arco temporale di oltre trent'anni (ogni titolo reca accanto il suo bravo "anno di nascita," che la nostra tracklist conserva) costituiscono il trampolino di lancio per questo nuovo album (incisione del dicembre 2014) dell'ottantatreenne sassofonista di Springfield. Gli è accanto il chitarrista Vic Juris, di cui abbiamo nella mente soprattutto la lunga collaborazione con Dave Liebman, oltre a svariati lavori in proprio, condotti sempre nel segno di un buon gusto mai troppo avventuroso.

Il dialogo fra i due si sviluppa in maniera del tutto naturale, ovviamente con Phil Woods a menare in prima battuta le danze, palesando un controllo dello strumento e una lucidità di fraseggio assolutamente invidiabili. Certo, da un lavoro come questo non era lecito attendersi sorprese di sorta, e tuttavia tutto fila liscio come l'olio, in particolar modo—entro un corpus pur qualitativamente molto omogeneo—in brani quali "Golden Earrings," "Long Ago & Far Away," "Who Cares?," l'immancabile "Lover Man," "Suppertime" e "These Foolish Things."
