Phil Woods – Jesse Green: Songs for COTA

Registrato lo scorso 26 maggio, questo album vede l'ormai quasi ottuagenario sassofonista del Massachussets duettare col pianista (di quarant'anni esatti più giovane) Jesse Green in ambito COTA (Celebration of the Arts), organismo/evento fondato anni fa in Pennsylvania dallo stesso Woods. Il materiale comprende tutti standard, tranne il conclusivo (e molto ampio: oltre sedici minuti, e ben settantasette sono i minuti totali del CD) "Keep It Simple," firmato dal sassofonista, che per l'occasione cede il posto al violino di Mark Woodyat.

Nei nove duetti alto/piano si ha agio di apprezzare un interscambio nitido per quanto fitto, fra ballad ("My Foolish Heart" la più ispirata), episodi più scattanti e trattamenti quasi-bossa (tipo quello riservato a "Django's Castle"). Certo non accade nulla di sconvolgente, ma neppure era il caso di aspettarselo: Woods suona ancora benissimo, e tanto basta.

Un discorso a parte merita il già citato "Keep It Simple," che apre squarci in fondo inattesi, col suo incedere sofficemente cameristico, che prende però corpo via via, acquisendo coloriture più schiettamente jazzistiche specie nel solo di piano. Un epilogo curioso, quindi, e senz'altro stimolante per un disco di altissimo artigianato.
