The John Coltrane Quintet Featuring Eric Dolphy: So Many Things: The European Tour 1961
Degli oltre trenta concerti stipati nelle tre settimane di tournée troviamo qui (con qualità di riproduzione ovviamente non eccelsa, ma mediamente buona) la musica che poterono ascoltare dal vivo gli spettatori di Parigi, Copenhagen, Helsinki e Stoccolma, pronti a dividersi, così come i critici, tra adepti e detrattori.
Dire oggi che queste tracce sono "storia" è facile e anche scontato, ma per il pubblico europeo di allora la curiosità verso la musica di questo tenorista torrenziale, che aveva conosciuto "di persona" l'anno prima nel gruppo di Miles Davis e che metteva spesso a dura prova le sue certezze, vibrava tra eccitazione e disappunto.
Il quintetto è completato da McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones e Reggie Workman, nonché da un Eric Dolphy straordinario contraltare dialogante con il solismo di Coltrane.
Il repertorio comprende "Blue Train," "My Favorite Things," "Impressions," "Naima," ma anche "I Want to Talk About You" e una più rara versione di "Delilah."
Sera dopo sera questi pezzi diventano il terreno per un continuo reinventare il processo improvvisativo: siamo ovviamente ancora lontani dai momenti in cui la ricerca di Coltrane andrà a rompere altri parametri formali, ma non c'è dubbio che nella musica suonata in queste serate ci sia già il germe di una tensione che ormai stava accompagnando il sassofonista dai primi lavori Atlantic e che si esprime in un bruciante desiderio di esplorare i confini del proprio gesto spirituale e sonoro.
Accompagnato da un ricco libretto, il box è da ascoltare e riascoltare. Non serve nemmeno che ve lo dica, vero?
